Photo by Matthew Borowick @mborowick | Ice sheets can be seen from above as they move under a bridge in southwestern Iceland. After traveling from the upper parts of the river near the village of Selfoss, this is the last step before these sheets of ice enter the sea.

Photo by @Sofia_Jaramillo5 | Mount Daly at sunrise, as seen from a butte near McLain Flats Road in Aspen, Colorado. Mount Daly is in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness and has an elevation of 13,300 feet (4,000 meters). According to some sources, the peak was named after former National Geographic Society president Augustus Daly.

photo_library Photo by @JimRichardsonNG | The Isle of Lewis is loaded with megalithic ruins, romantic reminders of all the folk who have lived here before. Dun Carloway, pictured here, is on the way to the west coast, just above Loch an Duin, and juicy with history. It’s a broch, built about 2,000 years ago, very likely by traveling crews of broch builders who could make your dwelling the most impressive in the island neighborhood. Still formidable in 1601, when the Morrisons were hiding out inside before the MacAuleys (who wanted their cattle back) found them. Donald Cam MacAuley is said to have climbed the walls and smoked them out with burning heather. (MacAuleys, Morrisons, and cattle still live around here.) Stones were “robbed” from the walls, probably to be found in farmhouses down the road a bit.

Photo by @bertiegregory | A curious arctic fox searches for prey on the west coast of the Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada. These foxes spend much of the year hunting for lemmings, a small brown rodent. As winter sets in, the lemmings stay underground. To combat this, the foxes use their incredible sense of hearing to listen for the faint footsteps of the lemmings under the snow. Once a target has been located, they jump up high and pounce to break through. #arctic #fox #cute #wildlife #cold

Photo by @andrea_frazzetta | Strombolicchio is the small, uninhabited sister island of Stromboli. Once part of the original volcano from which these islands were formed, this rock now stands out in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. A lighthouse is located on its summit. Have you ever imagined working as a lighthouse keeper? The view from the tower to the looming volcano, one of the most active in the world, is spectacular.

Photo by @stephen_matera | Every four or five years in North America, there is an explosion in the snowy owl population— known as an irruption—and 2012 was such a year, with snowy owls traveling farther south and in much larger numbers than normal, including many like this one at Boundary Bay park in southern British Columbia. There were probably 20 or more in a square mile area.

Photo by @jimmychin | I still remember my physical reaction after turning the corner and seeing Shivling for the first time. Jaw dropped, eyes wide, heart pumping. A truly stunning beauty of granite and ice. Still on the short list. Garwhal Himalaya, India.

Photo by @jonathankingston | Is seeing the aurora borealis on your bucket list? Magnificent and magical are two words that capture the pure state of wonder I found myself in while sailing on board the National Geographic Sea Bird under this spectacular display of northern lights in Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The red light visible through the windows of the bridge are used to preserve the captain’s night vision while reading nautical charts. #Alaska #GlacierBayNationalPark #NorthernLights #AuroraBorealis

Photo by Matthieu Paley @paleyphoto // Sponsored by @GoTurkey // We took a boat ride across Lake Van to reach the tiny island of Akdamar in Turkey. This 10th-century Armenian cathedral is ringed by almond groves. The island is on a popular bird migration route, and the many birds added a pleasant melody to our experience. We ended the day by taking a dip in the cool alkaline water and relaxing in the tranquility of the island. // Discover what makes Turkey so special. Follow #goturkey

Photo by @PaulNicklen | The first time I went to South Georgia, I hiked ahead of the group and stood on this ridge, alone, staring out over a sea of king penguins. So many emotions rushed through me, and I am a bit embarrassed to say it, but I was so overcome by the size of this thriving penguin colony that tears just started to run down my cheeks. That morning I shot over 3,500 images as I worked to capture what I was feeling. I never came close to achieving that goal, but the feeling associated with this photo will forever be a part of me. These are the experiences that motivate me to keep pushing for the protection of wild places like Antarctica.

Photo by @MichaelGeorge | Poppies bloom in a field outside of Pamplona, Spain, along the Camino de Santiago. The Camino is an ancient pilgrimage walk that leads people from many corners of Europe to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. At this part of the walk, pilgrims leave the Citadel of Pamplona and witness the Alto del Perdon, a statue of metal silhouettes representing walkers from the past. #camino #pamplona #spain #caminodesantiago #poppies
