Hey, all. The search for a hugely important position has begun. The next @calstate chancellor. People I’ve talked to said the next chancellor needs to be anti-racist. This open forum is going on now. My story for @LAist coming calstate.edu/Pages/livestre…
Super low in person turnout here at CSU headquarters in Long Beach. Only a few in person speakers, now taking online comments limited to one minute
Remember, @calstate has 23 campuses, nearly 500K students, many the first in their families in college, struggled through community college to try to earn a degree and improve their job prospects. The chancellor has many tools to help students achieve goals
I've heard and I'm hearing here that the next chancellor needs to do more to diversify CSU employee ranks. Here's a chart showing that nearly 60% of instructors are white. The disconnect is that nearly 80% of CSU students are non-white
People have told me this is what an anti-racist chancellor would do: fund campus student affinity centers (Black, LGBTQIA, Latinx, etc.), raise employee wages, increase employee payment to counter "cultural taxation"
Ever heard of "cultural taxation"? I had but not by that term. It's when a POC campus employee is called on to help POC students, and that's done under existing job description, it takes time, and is done outside of regular job duties. That's the taxation part
The salary kinda pays for a chancellor with superpowers. The last chancellor received a $625K salary with housing and car allowance. The next chancellor may earn more. What do you think?
.@csuf student said next chancellor needs to be connected to student needs. There's a lot of housing and food insecurity and other struggles among students
The forum is over. There's another one tomorrow and on Thursday, in Bakersfield and San Francisco but people can participate online. The link and other info is here calstate.edu/csu-system/cha…
Ok, last one. Here are the portraits of the CSU chancellors since 1961. This is in the entrance to the trustees’ board room
