The #NFL teams hurt/helped most by penalties this season This shows each team’s net gain/loss of Win Probability as a result of flags We think taking this unique approach to measuring the impact of penalties brings something new and interesting to #NFLStats. We hope you do too!
This is just the beginning though: - We’ll be continuing this analysis into the playoffs - We’re working to bring in rules analysts that can independently assess what calls/no-calls were correctly officiated - We'll be releasing new data/charts soon with more penalty stats
@AcCOUNTableRefs Say a team gets called for holding on first down and it nullifies a 30 yard gain. Is the WP change just going from 1st and 10 to 1st and 20, or is the 30 yard gain taken into account?
@AcCOUNTableRefs This feels flawed at face value. Three things that come immediately to mind (1) teams in close games have bigger % swings on a single play. (2) late game penalties have a bigger impact on win % (3) legitimacy of penalty is not accounted for. You don’t want calls missed just cause
@AcCOUNTableRefs Can you do this by player. I want to see Alex Leatherwood.
@AcCOUNTableRefs Better check that @Browns film again. 🤷♂️
@AcCOUNTableRefs Could be interesting to include the number of times tms were penalized too, shows not all penalties are equal in terms of WP, ie HOU was actually penalized more than BUF had very different seasons in terms of competitiveness tho Closer games = larger impact on WP
