Failure often breeds misery, but success rarely yields happiness. The point of setting ambitious goals isn't to experience joy. It's to pursue personal growth and mastery—or to create something of value for others. Excellence is more a path to purpose than to pleasure.
@AdamMGrant I think one should not be obsessed with goals. Rather, observe the trend. Goals not achieved can bring misery. A positive trend is always a good thing even if the goal was not achieved.
@AdamMGrant Hello, I just did a podcast episode with Sandy Rodriguez about this! Can I share it with you here?
@AdamMGrant True. Excellence comes from going for something which is beyond one's immediate reach.
@AdamMGrant It is excellent to have pleasure in what we do 😉
@AdamMGrant Is it success if it doesn’t yield happiness? For me, it’s always important to know love is most important. When people tell me they love me, after helping them, I feel incredibly successful. We should pursue the success that satisfies our soul. In that, we find success.
@AdamMGrant The poem ‘Ithaka’ by C.P. Cavafy sums this up best-the the journey is what offers us wisdom & makes us rich in experiences. “As you set out for Ithaka hope your road is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery ...Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.” Make it a long one.
