Our Constitutional Alteration Bill has just passed the House of Representatives. We’re one step closer to recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our Constitution.

Of all the full-time jobs created in the last year, two thirds went to women. As a result, more Australian women have full time jobs than ever before. This government is taking gender equality seriously, and we're already seeing results.

Reconciliation Week calls on us to reflect on what has been achieved, and what we can achieve together still. This morning in Parliament House, I met with Australians who are raising their voices together – in support of the Voice.

A moment of Australian unity. An extraordinary opportunity for every Australian to be counted and heard – to own this change and be proud of it, and truly live the spirit of the fair go.

“I do not disparage the symbolic ... As the 1967 referendum shows: the larger gestures may have to underpin other forms of progress,” she said. Back then, Australians voted in a referendum to remove a harmful, discriminatory relic. In 2023, our generation can go one better.

At tonight’s Lowitja O’Donoghue Oration in Adelaide, I spoke about how Australians will have the chance to vote Yes to the future we seek to build. Lowitja O’Donoghue was driven by her faith in the Australian people and their instinct for a fair go.

The Voice will be about recognition, and it will be about listening.

I wish Mark, Sarah and their family all the very best for the next chapter of their lives.

While it's true the sheer scale of his final election victory earned him a place in Australian political history, I know Mark's definition of success has always been about delivering for people, improving lives and creating progress that endures. He has done all this in spades.

Above all, Mark will be remembered for seeing the people of Western Australian safely through one of the most challenging crises in our nation's history. In unprecedented times, Mark always held to his convictions and always sought to do the right thing by his state.

Mark leaves office as he led, on his own terms and as his own man. He has been a great Premier of his proud state, an extraordinary leader for WA Labor and a trusted friend.

Today we mourn an extraordinary Australian, a poet of the brush. But more than anything, we celebrate him, and we hold on to the gift he gave us.   May John Olsen rest in peace.
