Somehow this needs to be said. Conflicts of interest work the same way in science as they do in journalism, politics, law etc. If you are "debunking" a lab leak #OriginOfCovid, best to declare the COI that you worked with the scientists suspected of starting the pandemic.
There was literally a situation where collaborators of the Wuhan Institute of Virology realized putting their name on @TheLancet letter condemning lab #OriginOfCovid would be seen as self-serving and linked back to their collaboration. x.com/ayjchan/status…

@TheLancet It is surprising to me that the co-authors of the @ScienceMagazine market #OriginOfCovid papers failed to see what even Peter Daszak of the EcoHealth Alliance could see in early 2020 - that a collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology was a COI. x.com/angie_rasmusse…
@TheLancet @ScienceMagazine There is only one solution for this. They all need to go through a year of RCR Responsible Conduct of Research classes starting immediately.
@Ayjchan @TheLancet @ScienceMagazine Well, because Peter Daszak was writing a perspective piece. For Worobey et al (and Pekar et al, though I was not a co-author of that one), we focused on the evidence concerning Huanan market. As none of us had a stake in Huanan or the live animal trade, we had no conflict.
@Ayjchan @TheLancet @ScienceMagazine I wish I could read this thread, but Angie blocked me
@Ayjchan @TheLancet @ScienceMagazine Especially as WIV was implicated as a potential source in a rebuttal to that @ScienceMagazine paper:
