I'm going to share an excerpt from Dr. King's "Give Us the Ballot" speech in 1957. I want you to read it. And truly let it sink in. Then remember it next time someone says that our movement for justice needs to slow down, or be quiet, or wait our turn.
"There is a dire need today for a liberalism which is truly liberal. What we are witnessing today [...] is a sort of quasi-liberalism which is based on the principle of looking sympathetically at all sides...
"It is a liberalism so bent on seeing all sides, that it fails to become committed to either side. It is a liberalism that is so objectively analytical that it is not subjectively committed. It is a liberalism which is neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm...
"We call for a liberalism [...] which will be thoroughly committed to the ideal of racial justice and will not be deterred by the propaganda and subtle words of those who say: ‘Slow up for a while; you’re pushing too fast.’”
This Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day feels different. Voting rights. Teaching the truth about our history. The treatment of Black migrants at our border. The lack of action on ending police violence. His legacy is being taken for granted.
Dr. King warned us about this in 1957. And so let me say this. In 2022, we must commit ourselves to a politics that is unabashedly committed to racial justice in the face of lies, hatred, and propaganda. They tell us to slow up. We're telling them they need to catch up.
@CoriBush I never cease 2 b astonished & saddened by USA politics. In Aotearoa NZ there is racism but nobody wld think 2 restrict voting rights like they do in USA. If you're 18, a citizen or permanent resident & lived cont for a year in NZ u can vote. Postal or person. Booths everywhere.
@CoriBush @TheChangfucius Thank you congresswoman for identifying and working on the problem. Most importantly thank you for serving others before yourself. We need more like you.
@CoriBush So glad I'm not the only one feeling some kinda way all day today. Haven't been able to put it into words but this is it.
@CoriBush They are not “migrants” they are illegal immigrants. Our boarders must be respected. Immigrants need to follow the laws of the USA.
@CoriBush They are NOT migrants. They are ILLEGAL immigrants. As a matter of fact 1 of our police officers in Houston was shot and killed by a career criminal illegal immigrant from Honduras last week. PROTECT OUR SOUTHERN BORDER.
