Morning folks! Today I'll be covering Cleveland's Board of Zoning Appeals meeting for #CLEdocumenters. This live-twitter coverage is brought to you by @cledocumenters and @NeighborUpCle
The meeting started at 9:30. Roll was called. Only 3 members are present, so all motions require unanimous support to pass. No postponements. The 1st case is up: Case No. 22-139.
Property owners at W 14th and Clark wish to erect a fence around their high-traffic, corner property. Tremont West and City Planning approved the variance request on the condition the fence was picket-style.
Next Case: Case No. 22-141. The property owners wish to build an addition and a garage to their Ohio City property. The Minor variance request was granted.
Case No 22-142: The owners wish to turn the property into a residential facility for folks with mental health issues. City planning and the board asked they get their council members approval as well as speaking with their neighbors, rescheduling their case for Sept. 26.
Neighborhood/council support for group homes is generally asked for before Zoning will support a variance request. Said one board member: "We need to be consistent in this request, and let applicants know beforehand that this is a requirement."
Case No. 22-123: The owner wishes to turn their Ward 4 property from a hair salon into a multipurpose center focused on local small business development and entrepreneurship.
The Board had questions at the previous hearing and asked the owner to return with Council support and hours of operation. Hours are proposed at 9am-11pm. Council support was given, says appellant. The variance is granted, wrapping up the caseload for today.
City Planning presented the new Zoning Appeals yard signs. The signs, which will include case information and a QR code, are a pilot program, designed to engage the public and support transparency.
The meeting ended at 10:40. That's a wrap folks!👋 “Have questions? Think we got something wrong? Send any inquiries on the meeting or these tweets to @cledocumenters. Or email us at [email protected]”
