@DavidFerris You write the 50 mi battery range of the final Volts is "far more than PHEVs on the market today." That's in the USA. The recent VW Tiguan and Golf PHEVs in the EU are there. Most of the 1.5M/yr BYD PHEVs. Li Auto's L7, L8 and L9 SUVs almost 100. W/fast charging. PHEVs rock.

@DavidFerris I have never talked to a Volt owner who didn't absolutely LOVE their vehicle.
@DavidFerris In the past solar installations on vehicles were so heavy that the added weight offset any gains from having the panels. Now they’ve gotten significantly lighter but still insufficient surface area to make much difference. Still think they might be helpful in cases like camping.

@DavidFerris Or for trucks with relatively large trailers the added surface area could have lightweight solar panels installed to help with hotel loads, keeping batteries charged, dealing with other occasional or vampire loads which otherwise would reduce mileage.
@DavidFerris Sort of, it's also just a bad place for solar panels! 1) Often placed in shade / garage 2) Limited access to energy demand sources (unplugged) 3) Bad surface area (curves, sunroofs) 4) Doesn't last long enough. Solar panel lifespan is 25-30 years.
@DavidFerris A lot of startups have flirted with this idea. It doesn't end up adding enough bang for the buck really. Feels like we could just fix EV charging...
