The people deliberately ramming their vehicles into protestors.
1. I would like to introduce you to the idea of a failure bucket. Here is a thread about failure buckets.
2. When we are learning something new, we are going to fail. A lot. Example: I am constantly trying to learn how to tell better stories in my writing & my talks.
3. I decided to focus on this when I started my faculty job. So I on purpose gave myself many opportunities to fail. Applied for a bunch of grants, many of which I didn't get. Wrote papers targeting journals that I thought were too fancy.
4. I still do these things, in part to help me learn from others' feedback, in part because practice helps me improve, in part because sometimes I'm wrong and end up with acceptances where I anticipated rejections.
5. Because I'm focusing on story-telling, I also need to pick some places NOT to fail. I have a failure bucket that I can fill about halfway and still be a joyous person. I'm devoting most of that space to story-telling.
6. There isn't that much room in my failure bucket for, like, stats failure. So I design studies such that I can analyze them with straightforward stats I already know.
7. If I was spending time on complicated analyses not working in R, I wouldn't have room in my failure bucket to keep having a fabulous life when my grants & papers get rejected. I'd have to submit fewer things, or aim for less fancy places, or be more miserable.
8. I also empty out my failure bucket by hanging out with people I like and watching Netflix and reading novels and such. Also sometimes I look at my CV so I can remember that it isn't all failure all the time around here.
9. So when I get a rejection, my bucket fills up. Then I take a bath and eat some pie and my bucket empties out again. Can't just be letting failure accumulate in there because then I wouldn't have space for more failure, or I'd need to get more miserable.
10. Important to keep space for failure because failure helps me learn how to suck less. I get more grants now and publish in fancy places sometimes because I put together not-great arguments, learned, and started making better arguments.
11. We often think of failure as something that happens to us. But it can also be something we choose. To some extent, we can choose where we want to experience it & how much we want. Can also decide NOT to fail in other areas (again, to some extent) to balance things out.
12. Go out and fail! It's fun, or sucky, but either way there can be ice cream at the end and less failure in the future. /End
better still: if folks want to volunteer to do this, their jobs could be required to give them 1 day a week for it, and some tax money could be reallocated to compensate them for their time.

@DrPhilGoff I love this, but can we just appreciate the “your shoelace is untied” joke. That’s a classic and listening to the joy of that girl with the silly joke just made me tear up. Man, that energy is so wholesome and incredible. I’m so happy for this school ans these kids.
