It’s outrageous that instead of making treatment better & more available, the response by electeds is to force/jail people into treatment that is either not available or doesn’t work. Even with all this said, if someone is homeless, treatment alone w/o housing is insufficient.
Our elected leaders can’t treatment their way out of public suffering where the treatment out there isn’t even available, is subpar, & there are long wait lines.
The difference between me and someone on the street is that I was able to suffer privately. My suffering wasn’t visible on our streets for people to see, for people to be impacted by, and for my already immense suffering to be compounded by the trauma of homelessness.
I was employed and so had access to money. Eventually, I had to find a private specialist who charged me $300 a session. But this was after weeks of struggling, including having thoughts of suicide. Thank god for my loved ones who kept me safe and loved.
I remember calling an emergency treatment provider at a leading NYC hospital, but I didn’t fit the “criteria.” I even tried to get into studies just to get help. The one appointment I got was in a very unsafe neighborhood where there was one doctor spending 5 mins with patients.
I went on ZocDoc and tried to get appointments with therapists or psychiatrists—everyone was booked at least 2 months out. I was in need of urgent help and I couldn’t get it. The public education messaging was “Reach out for help.” I did and there was no help.
I had decided to stop using substances— the fallout was great. I became severely depressed & developed crippling insomnia, sometimes up for days at a time unable to fall asleep. It affected every part of my life. I called emergency treatment lines—but I didn’t fit criteria…
Let’s talk about treatment for drugs/mental health. It’s framed as a personal failure if someone struggling doesn’t get treatment or “succeed.”BUT when I went through a crisis & tried to urgently get treatment, I faced barrier after barrier—only having access to money saved me.🧵

@DrugPolicyOrg Yes I was a part of those 2014 crackdowns on street heroin. I got a possession charge during that year. When I got off probation I noticed it all turned to fentanyl. Sad really. People started dying.
We can’t incarcerate our way out of homelessness and every dollar we spend criminalizing poverty is still a dollar we could have better spent on affordable housing, supportive services, and economic opportunity.

We all make & support choices that are informed by our everyday experience. Like many of you, we at DPA don't want to lose more of our loved ones to overdose or incarceration. Lawmakers need to stop positioning criminalization as a solve for human suffering, when it’s a cause.
Our ED @Kassandra_Fred responds to Oregon's return to failed drug war policies. Her vision? We actually ensure people get the resources that they need to thrive. Decriminalization of all drugs is a part of that vision - one part of a tapestry of interventions communities need.
People don’t understand that the unregulated drug supply is what is responsible for all the overdose deaths. They wrongly point to harm reduction and drug decriminalization as the scapegoats. OD deaths rates are high in states without drug decrim and harm redux.

What is drug treatment? I asked this question to a group of advocates. One person said “my home.” This is an important answer. When we think of public suffering & public drug use, being housed is essential to one’s stability and our collective wellbeing.
