As a kid growing up, to live near a military base was in your head living in the world of UNIT and Doctor Who. Then as a teen it hits you that you’re just living next to a nuclear target and they’ll be no TARDIS rescue. - #MattAdams, 1982
@HooklandGuide We had a nuclear bunker at the top of our street. This bothers me more with hindsight than it did as a kid.
@HooklandGuide Very true; I was brought up in sight of GCHQ, during a period that included the Cuba crisis. Being young, I was ignorant of the immediate threat - but there was a definite edge in the household during those days.
@HooklandGuide Yep! Greenham Common, 1981 & beyond …
@HooklandGuide My Dad used to say to me when I was little ‘don’t worry they’ll bomb the base at Northwood first, we won’t feel a thing’ Gen X childhood 😳
@HooklandGuide I had this realization when I was stationed in Cheyenne, WY at FE Warren AFB. It was no doubt a prime target, first to be hit. And we'd be in the middle of it. My family and me.
@HooklandGuide @cultauthor Yup, living near Greenham Common I the 80s was fun 😂
@HooklandGuide You have that realization as an adult too. I work at a government lab. Amazing and surprising things happen there. I'm not far from Roswell, just to add to it. It's also a top tier war target, so that's fun!
