While we in Ukraine fear more attacks, we understand there is a bigger threat - that this Russian posturing is intended to scare the hell out of Ukraine and allies, causing us, with western urging, to make concessions leading to the total loss of our sovereignty and future.
This crisis once again illustrates the bitter truth that Europeans are fundamentally unable to look after themselves. With 100,000 troops on Ukraine's border, Europeans are in meeting after meeting struggling to agree on anything that comes close to a meaningful common response
The European Union has a population of well over 400 million and it's one of the richest regions on earth. But because of our inability to allocate resources or agree on anything that matters, we have to plead for American help when dealing with an economy the size of Italy.
When Russia invaded Georgia in Aug 2008, the leaders of Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia immediately flew together to Tbilisi in support of the country’s inviolability and to stop an attack on the capital. Can we expect the same support from Ukraine’s allies?
Whenever anyone talks about agreements with #Russia, I think of the 2014 Ilovaisk massacre, where, after agreeing to allow Ukrainian troops to retreat from Russian encirclement on Ukrainian territory, the Russian army fired at the Ukrainians like fish in a barrel as they fled.
Remember the Budapest Memorandum?
The agreement under which Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security assurances from Russia, the US and Britain.
The one that Russia violated by illegally occupying Ukrainian Crimea and Eastern Donbas.
New day, new anonymous messages about bombs planted in Kyiv. About 40 schools, two courts are temporarily closed as the police checks them after receiving bomb alerts.
This is yet another hostile tactics aimed at intimidating Ukrainians, as I wrote here cepa.org/be-afraid-has-…
Germany opposes to switch off Russia from SWIFT because Germany wants to buy Russian gas even if Russia wages a full scale war against Ukraine. Germany will be held responsible for war too. Germany had the means to deter Russia from war but did not do it concisely
The Germans said yesterday they don’t support closure of Swift or the termination of NS2. US announced the same today. Today, Baerbock repeated Germany's long-standing policy of not selling arms. Germany is the world's 5th largest arms seller, has sold to Russia, but not to UA. twitter.com/ilvestoomas/st…
"While Russia worked at reducing its dependence on foreign financing, the EU did little to reduce its reliance on Moscow’s energy exports — running the risk that sanctions could backfire"
Read this together with @dpatrikarakos' brilliant piece today.
Even most pro-EU and crystal-clear democratic Ukrainians are furious about @ABaerbock yesterday statement and take it as pure German arrogance and hypocrisy. That is the backfire to @ABaerbock statement in Kyiv I told about and which any expert could predict. Much to repair :( twitter.com/dkaleniuk/stat…
This is not just an article, this is a truly good essay. Rarely have I read anything this well written from any politician. Do read it. It puts all the usual boilerplate, happy talk and empty clichés to shame.
I am genuinely impressed. I rarely am.
This was the most splendid statements on Ukraine we have heard in a long time.
All hats off to Ben Wallace of the UK for this Winston Churchill-worth speech to the parliament.
“Ukraine has every right to defend its borders.”
Absolutely. “It’s not the disposition of NATO forces but the appeal of its values that actually threatens the Kremlin.Just as we know that its actions are really about what Pres Putin’s interpretation of history is and his unfinished ambitions for Ukraine” gov.uk/government/new…
On which side is Germany? Russia or the West? It is promoting Nord Stream 2, opposing not only military support but arms sales to Ukraine, and it has repeatedly violated US sanctions on Crimea. twitter.com/RikeFranke/sta…
Russia claims to fear being "encircled" by NATO, when in reality less than 6% of the country borders NATO member states. Meanwhile, as this map indicates, the Russian military is genuinely encircling Ukraine
Moscow frames current crisis as result of #NATO enlargement.
If so, why now? Since 2004, just 4 countries joined NATO: Albania, Croatia, Montenegro and N Macedonia.
None of these is within 1100 kilometers of #Russia.
This Kremlin-manufactured crisis is about #Ukraine.
Excellent article by UK Defense Secretary Wallace on current European crisis created by #Russia, exposing fallacy of Moscow's claim that #NATO poses threat and noting Kremlin's real preoccupation is subverting #Ukraine.
As well as helping #Ukraine militarily, we need to make clear to President Putin that his concept of a Russian near-abroad is at odds with international law and the concept of self-determination. We are witnessing a classic example of the KGB doctrine of reflexive control. #NATO
