It’s always inspiring to see the young men & women who’ve made a choice to serve. We had lunch with cadets from all areas represented by members—Arkansas, Oklahoma, California, Texas, Alabama, and Florida. They’ve gone from receiving a congressional nomination to becoming cadets!
Academics are a major component of @WestPoint_USMA’s mission of training and shaping a strong military. @KenCalvert @RepRutherfordFL @RepMikeRogersAL @RepBice and I joined cadets in the classroom for lessons on military leadership, politics, and international relations.

Boxing is a mandatory part of the curriculum. Cadets are taught offensive and defensive skills of amateur boxing. They’re trained in stances, movement, and punches—and then evaluated in the ring! This exposes them to defense techniques and prepares them for physical threats.
Next, we observed the Indoor Obstacle Course Test (IOCT), a full-body and grueling physical fitness evaluation. Initiated in 1944 during #WWII, the IOCT was created through lessons learned during the war as a comprehensive measurement of a cadet's physical ability. #WestPoint
IOCT is a series of obstacles assessing agility, strength, technique, and cardio capacity. The course includes a low crawl under a barrier, tire footwork, a two-handed vault, maneuvering over an 8 foot horizontal shelf, balance beam, ladder, vertical rope, sprinting, and more.
We watched Cadet Sydney Cassalia and Cadet Matthew Bassette navigate all the obstacles. Their performance was impressive to say the least. They demonstrated excellence and skill at every point. These young leaders are the future of our Army. @WestPoint_USMA
During this unique and challenging training, these future soldiers experience swimming in uniform and boots, while holding tactical gear. It physically tests them, and they also practice fear management and breath control. It’s about preparing them for a life-or-death scenario.

I recently sent a letter with 27 of my House colleagues to President Biden urging him to make E-Verify mandatory in any immigration reform proposal coming out of his administration. American jobs should only go to American workers and those legally authorized to work in the U.S.
