The feeling of longing for someone who cares less about you is compelling because it’s familiar. It triggers the same false promise it did with your parents: if I only try hard enough, they'll love me.
If you use logic to try and convince your body it has no right to feel the way it does, you’re not alone. But your body knows you’re unsafe even when your mind gives it all the evidence in the world that you are not in danger.
You do for people even when they don’t ask because you were primed to anticipate others’ needs in order to stay safe. It’s too late when the bomb goes off; you had to suss it out and defuse it ahead of time.
When we grow up in a dysfunctional home we learn to cater to the needs and wants of others instead of ourselves. That means the holidays are a time of obligation, over giving, and fear that no matter what you do, it will never be enough.
Society and the families within it have a twisted way of protecting perpetrators of abuse. To guard themselves from what they don't want to hear, they discredit the victim. If you have suffered this type of add-on abuse, you know it can be more traumatizing than the abuse itself.
You never learned healthy coping mechanisms as a child. So, you adopted unhealthy ones to get through life the only way you knew how. That's why addictions can't be combatted through logic or reason. Survival brain feels it needs the addiction to survive & you'll die without it.

Many of us tend to focus on what could go wrong in a given situation and there are good reasons for that. If you have a history of things being taken away from you, for example, you might anticipate that as a way to protect yourself.
If you grew up without praise or encouragement, or were criticized harshly, you will be overly sensitive to feedback. You equate criticism with unendurable rejection. Instead of feeling like you may have done something wrong, you feel irretrievably wrong and shaken to your core.
If you’ve had a traumatic past, you may find it difficult to make decisions. Instead of coming from a calm and centered place, your choices are made from a sense of urgency. This is often a sign of a lack of self-trust. It is also evidence of an unhealed inner child at the helm.
Maintaining the status quo requires denial, gaslighting, and making you look crazy for seeking the truth. Most of the time, these people have no interest in healing. In fact, your journey of transformation is more fodder for them to perpetuate the myth of you as the broken one.

It took the whole day, but this year's Easter cake is finally done and in the fridge where it will stay until Easter Sunday (at which point we'll roll back the macaroon stone and remove the cake pop figure inside the tomb). It's our 11th year making a cake on Good Friday.
