This morning I outlined strategies for the 49ers’ O-line to keep improving. Signing versatile veteran depth for the interior that could also play outside in a pinch was one of the steps. The acquisition of Jon Feliciano fits all that criteria: theathletic.com/4320774/2023/0…

49ers O-line if season started today: LT: Trent Williams — Jaylon Moore — Alfredo Gutierrez LG: Aaron Banks — Jason Poe C: Jake Brendel — Keith Ismael RG: Spencer Burford — Nick Zakelj RT: Colton McKivitz — Leroy Watson 6th man (rover): Jon Feliciano Still needed: OT firepower

No, they are fortifying depth on the interior. It's been several years since Feliciano put up a full season/those numbers at RG. More than anything, the 49ers needed an O-lineman they could plug in anywhere following Brunskill's departure twitter.com/OmarelloBringa…

How is newest 49ers' O-lineman Jon Feliciano as a pass protector? PFF pass-blocking efficiency ranks in his two most recent full (qualifying) seasons... 2022 (center): #13 of 27 2019 (right guard): #26 of 64

And yes, Jon Feliciano will have a chance to start for the 49ers. Competition is important to them. But it’s more important to look at big picture: Super Bowl contenders need at least 7 quality O-linemen because that many will be necessary at some point. Feliciano fits that mix

The 49ers have signed 31-year-old vet Jon Feliciano, who can be a replacement for Daniel Brunskill. Feliciano has played every position — LT, LG, C and RG — except for RT in the NFL. He started for the Giants at center last year. But this is primarily depth for the interior OL twitter.com/KimJonesSports…

I am sure the 49ers are in on that market, but they want to drive a price that lands on their terms. Same with Robbie Gould. Negotiating hard is what ultimately creates cap sustainability. Can't allow yourself death by a thousand paper cuts with these deals twitter.com/SchulsLo/statu…

Workload 49ers must replace at edge. Departures accounted for 1,609 of total DE 2,822 snaps (57%) below.
So far SF has added Clelin Ferrell, a 492-snap guy last season. That leaves 49ers about 700 snaps short.
SF needs 2 more impact DEs + Drake Jackson to become a 600-snap guy

Also worth noting that Jordan Willis — like Charles Omenihu, Arden Key and others — was a player the 49ers acquired for cheap and developed into a significant contributor under Kris Kocurek. It’s natural to lose these types of guys. Key is to keep the factory churning

A truly "wow" moment: Jordan Willis chose not to do a postgame press conference after The Block because he wanted the focus to remain on the 49ers' team — especially Shanahan, Garoppolo and the top defensive players who'd endured stiffest criticism before pulling SF out of a rut:

Jordan Willis was a really good 49er. Obviously wasn’t a front-line DE but delivered a great motor to the Bravo unit and notched a huge special teams play in franchise history twitter.com/fieldyates/sta…

Yes. This Dwelley signing doesn’t preclude anything. 49ers still have a ton of roster room and it’ll cost them very little cap space. If you can ensure a sturdy floor for next to no cost, you do it twitter.com/baysportsfam/s…

Two things can be true. The 49ers' investment into the offensive line can be much improved from past seasons, but it could still need more work. @LombardiHimself explains potential next steps: theathletic.com/4320774/2023/0…

49ers have re-signed Ross Dwelley to a 1-year deal. TEs now on roster: George Kittle Charlie Woerner Dwelley Last season, SF carried up to 5 TEs on 90-man. They love this TE draft class and still have room for 1 more FA signing there. Dwelley raises floor of room, knows system

@PsilentAssassin Most of that occurred due to 2 QBs defying expectations. And those are exceptions, not norms

Will be doing another piece on those. Wanted to focus on pass protection first. But the 49ers' run blocking improved over the course of the season, as it usually does since there's complexity behind the operation. Takes some time to click twitter.com/gene_hill/stat…

There's so much context missing in most discussions of the 49ers' O-line. Here are their pass-block grades by season. Pressure rate allowed mirrors these.
Investment and improvement has happened. The key point is that more of each is necessary.

Detroit was #5 offense/#28 defense DVOA last season. Tremendously imbalanced and that cost them the playoffs even with a nice season from Goff and the offense. Most of these additions have been targeted toward bringing that defense up to speed twitter.com/MySportsUpdate…

Big-name talent drain in Philly, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They ranked #6 DVOA there last year. Will be interesting to see how balanced of a team the Eagles can field in 2023 given these departures twitter.com/adamschefter/s…

This courtesy @corryjoel. Keeping/paying the option bonus is necessary for 49ers to stay cap compliant. That’s why it has been assumed by the cap sites that SF would pay it. No official word on whether/not they have but I assume it’s merely a technicality and the answer is yes

When 49ers did Deebo Samuel’s contract last summer, they built in a 2023 option bonus — essentially a chance to restructure deal this year. Same amount of $, just a conversation of $9.215m to base salary if paid out as a signing bonus by today. That $$ spread out thru 2027 vs cap
