However, internally we already have to teach a lot of design specific terms, so it becomes incredibly useful. The pros of being short and specific are magnified, the cons of not making intuitive sense without explanation are heavily mitigated. #wotcstaff /thread
I think bottle is a great illustration of the differences between internal and external terms. I wouldn't expect bottle to catch on externally because it's hard to teach to someone without showing them an old card that's unreadable to most current players (like me!) #wotcstaff
Pros: Bottle is short, succinct, and unique; there aren't any other terms we use that it could be mistaken for. Also, bottle is a fun word to say, which is an underrated perk. Cons: If you're not familiar with Elkin Bottle, the term doesn't imply what it means at all. #wotcstaff
The third name is Bottle/Bottling Source: Elkin Bottle, an old card originally from Ice Age that's one of the first to feature this kind of effect. #wotcstaff
"Impulse" is short hand for looking at your top N cards. E.g. We might say Frontier Seeker has "etb impulse five for a plains or mount" "Impulse" is more red than blue conceptually, but sadly for the color pie, momentum is a huge factor in what terms stick. #wotcstaff
The second name is Impulse Draw/Impulsive Draw. Source: this comes from the flavor of the effect. This effect is drawing a card with a red feeling downside: you have to use it right away! It's more shortsighted and impulsive than drawing a card normally. #wotcstaff
Pros: Impulsive draw is evocative of the effect, and it relates to how we use it (i.e. a red version of card draw) Cons: The name is a combination of two other pieces of nomenclature we use often (impulse and draw), and it technically does neither.
Pros: It's cute! Cons: As we used the effect more and more, the connection to Chandra became very weak. It was just a staple effect for any red card. Also, we need terms that are clear in discissions, and a pun like Chandraw just doesn't hold up to rigorous use. #wotcstaff

@ghirapurigears @MTGCal FWIW, using EDHREC's advanced filters all but alleviates this feeling on the site tbh. Example: here's Hazezon's base dataset with 6000+ decks. And then Hazezon's dataset specifying lists WITHOUT x y z staple. Suddenly, you have a MUCH more interesting subset of the same data.
...i just wish there was more of a personal touch that helped find cards to use, not just 'these are the cards everyone plays'
one of the more annoying things about building a deck is that all the resources point you towards optimizing, and coalescing on the 'stock' build, rather than showing you neat cards that could also be used in the archetype. i get why, because that's how data collation works, but
