We continue pretraining XLM-R models on the MultiLegalPile both multilingually and monolingually and compare them against five common multilingual models. 6/9
When evaluating on LEXTREME, we find our legal models to outperform all baselines on aggregate. Especially our longformer model performs really well in the first four (single label text classification tasks). 7/9
When aggregating results across languages (giving equal weight to each language), we find monolingual models to perform especially well in five languages with relatively little data in the MultiLegalPile (Croatian, Latvian, Maltese, Dutch, and Slovenian). 8/9
On LexGLUE, our English large model achieves a SotA and outperforms all previous methods in five out of seven tasks. The multilingual legal models perform well, but do not reach the level of the English models with the same size. 9/9
