(1/8) Thread on MCU3 Retrofit: Inspired by @BLKMDL3, I put together a list of the retrofits that I have wanted to add to my 2018 Model 3 Performance for the last few months. I created a service appointment via the @Tesla app requesting a quote for the following part numbers:
(2/8) These PNs included: - Updated Repeater Cameras - New design that resolves light bleed issue when automatic blind spot camera is used at night - Laminated Glass Windows - These do not freeze up like tempered glass and offer better noise reduction - AMD Ryzen MCU (MCU3)
(3/8) After requesting a quote for the first two items I got a call from a very knowledgeable escalations rep at @Tesla. I was told the repeater cameras were a drop-in replacement for the existing ones however the laminated glass windows would not work w/ my 2018 Model 3.
(4/8) We then proceeded to talk for another 30 minutes and came to the conclusion that the laminated glass windows could work however different door seals and window regulators would more than likely be required. I asked him to add them to the quote just in case.
(5/8) After discussing the repeater cameras and laminated glass, we continued to chat about MCU3. He then unfortunately confirmed my suspicion that @Tesla will never offer a MCU3 upgrade option because it requires the 16V Li-Ion 🔋 & wiring harnesses included in newer Teslas.
(6/8) A few hours after the conversation I received a quote for the requested parts minus the MCU3 hardware (see below). I came to the conclusion that I wouldn’t proceed with pulling the trigger on the mods until I for sure knew I couldn’t DIY the MCU3 upgrade myself.
(7/8) I continued to research the subject & came across the following teardown which includes a visible sticker that says “INPUT: 16V @ 10A”. This all but confirms what the Tesla rep mentioned in that the new MCU hardware requires a 16V system, thus preventing retrofits.

(8/8) While MCU2 still has some life I worry @Tesla will not optimize their software enough to return UI performance to what it was w/ V10. As a result, I’ve decided to take advantage of the used car market & trade my 2018 Model 3 Performance in while the market is 🔥.
@DBurkland @Tesla @elonmusk @TeslaOwnersMN @BLKMDL3 The FOMO is real
@Model3Owners @DBurkland @Tesla @elonmusk @TeslaOwnersMN @BLKMDL3 Do you think MCU 2 will continue to perform well?
@Model3Owners @DBurkland @Tesla @elonmusk @TeslaOwnersMN @BLKMDL3 The glass would be great in colder climates. And nice to switch out repeaters for bleed issue.
