EMTALA is a federal law requiring hospitals to provide care to stablize a person & provide care in life & death situations regardless of insurance status. This means denying women abortions due to a fetal heart beat when the woman's life is in danger, violates federal law.

She was a nurse, she had 2 degrees (in English Literature and Criminology), was a talented writer and artist, worked as a professional photographer in both sports and music, travelled to many places, raised a child and battled her own suicidal ideation and overwhelm. Incredible.

She was capable and intelligent. She achieved more in her 39 years than I will ever achieve. All of this on top of deeply struggling with her sense of self. She followed her dreams. She believed in people. It’s important I think to have people like that around you.

She was naive. So naive. I am too I think but it’s easier to see in someone else. She’d really trust in people and their good intentions. It made her vulnerable but it was also so nice to see the world through her lens - just trusting people and taking them at face value.

There really was something magical about her. She created magic and whimsy wherever she went. Every day felt like an adventure when I was really little and so much of that was down to her. It’s so easy to feel safe in the world when someone fills it with fairies and joy for you.

She was so fiercely protective of me. My childhood was complex because I had to cope with some aspects of her suffering with her mental health that were beyond what a child should have to. But in terms of her deliberate impact on me… it was deeply supportive. She built me up.

She was a nurse. Caring for people was deeply ingrained in who she was. It’s such a positive trait but one that we take for granted almost as a given. She was forgiving and understanding and full of empathy. Truly a good person to her core.

She LOVED dogs. If she had any special interests, this was one of hers. From quite a young age, she counted the dogs she saw on any given day. After she had me (at 20) we’d do that together. Just a running tally of dogs you’ve seen that day. She’d love my dog so much.

For many many reasons, I believe that if she were alive today she’d be diagnosed autistic. It’s tough for me to make peace with the fact that she’ll never get the answers she deserves but I feel like I understand her more as time goes on. She loved learning about psychology.

She was emotional and sensitive. She felt everything very deeply. She empathised with people, animals and inanimate objects. She really went into things with her whole heart.
