Between his impressive football resume, the work of his own foundation, and the philanthropic inspiration he’s provided to NFL players for decades, Payton’s unselfish personality and passion for community has cemented him as one of the all-time greats in professional sports.
In 1999, Payton revealed he had a rare liver disease, which led to him to become an outspoken advocate for organ donation. Sadly, he passed away that same year at the young age of 45, but not before making a substantial impact on yet another important issue.
In 1988, Walter and Connie Payton launched their foundation which aims at helping underserved youth in Illinois. In addition to helping children, the foundation also has programs to provide veterans with the resources and opportunities for them to thrive.
He was a 9x Pro Bowler, 5x All-Pro, named to the All-1970s and All-1980s HOF teams, and was named MVP in 1977. When he retired in 1987, he was considered one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game of football, and he was inducted into the @ProFootballHOF in 1993.
Payton was taken 4th overall by the @Bears in the 1975 Draft, and became a staple in the city. He won the Man of the Year award in 1977 for his philanthropic work in Chicago. In a 13 year career, he won a Super Bowl, had 125 TDs and over 21K yards, and missed just one game.
At Jackson State University, Payton earned the nickname “Sweetness” for his athletic ability, along with his kind personality. Payton made the All-American team in '73 and '74. He continued to invest in others, studying education with an emphasis on working with the deaf.
Once Eddie graduated, Walter agreed to play on the team and immediately became a star. During his senior year, his all-Black school integrated, and Payton’s athletic performance and sheer determination helped ease the tension around desegregation in his community.
Walter Payton was born on July 25th, 1954, in Columbia, Mississippi. As a child, he was involved with his church and Boy Scouts, which shaped his strong character. He did not play football until his junior year of high school, not wanting to compete with his brother Eddie.
