Re Education in America: GOP Debate comments about teachers...OMG!!
1970: All was possible. Special Ed focused on the child and on developing methods to ensure rapid mastery. 2020: All disregarded. Special Ed focus is Cost and minimal support (Tier System). 😥
Dyslexia Instruction: Remedial student-teacher connection must be successful at the very first session...remedial trust/ safety must be apparent by the second session...ease of task mastery must be apparent by the third session. (see my books re "How to" methods/case studies).
Grade 2 student offered placement in his Public School Gifted Program...."Any sick day missed work must be made up". Let the pressure begin!!
The Issue: Letter to sound v Sound to letter...seriously??? Instruction is not about "Team Jargon"; it's about "Team Llteracy". 10 minute solution to "short vowel sound association" (DM me or see my books).
Can we finally move on...Teaching Reading is neither a Science nor an Art. It is the combination of the two that ensures Effective Intervention. It is following the lead of the student that ensures Efficient Intervention.
Instruction: keep it simple...mnemonic and/or logic.
We keep fine-tuning the details but miss the big picture...Literacy, achieved through whichever method works! Suggestion: Advocacy for the Learner rather than for the Program.
