A girl died in one of my allergy groups yesterday because after a reaction at school, no staff had access to the locked up epipen as the nurse wasn’t there that day. Epi-pens are meant to be on someone’s person at all times, not locked away. I hope they’re sued into oblivion.
@Patricia_Ann_E Omg. That’s unbelievable. Epi pens should be freely available. Certainly not locked away. I’m so sorry this happened.
@Patricia_Ann_E Fuck. My daughter had a severe allergic reaction at daycare. Staff had access to the epipen but did not administer it. Luckily my spouse was nearby and came in right away and gave it. She still needed 2 more doses from the paramedics. There should be so much more awareness
@Patricia_Ann_E @Eleven_Films Shouldn’t the person with the allergy be the person responsible for having the pen near by?
@Patricia_Ann_E An Epipen is a medication. Medications require training and/or a license to administer. If the child or their parents could sign off on the child as having the proper training then fine. The critical second step is calling 911. It's still possible to stop breathing after 2/
@Patricia_Ann_E I’m a school nurse. I have fought physicians who refused to sign self carry orders for epi. These are middle schoolers. They can handle it. Some won’t sign until the student is in high school, no exceptions.
@Patricia_Ann_E EpiPen has free yellow boxes. I put one on the wall outside my school nursing office with a breakaway seal. Diagrams for use are inside. I also taught the staff when & how to use if the nurse is not available.
@Patricia_Ann_E @thatonearies_ someone tell DHS that then. i worked in pre-k for two years with a student that needed an epipen and i had to lock it away every day. wasn’t even allowed to carry it with me to a playground or anything bc it’s in child’s reach and according to them that’s dangerous
@Patricia_Ann_E @m_hawkins This is unbelievably sad for the girl and negligent on the side of the school.
@Patricia_Ann_E This is awful. Medical supplies should never be locked away - just out of reach to children. As you say, an Epipen should be with the allergy vulnerable person at all times, if they are capable of using it.
