Wow. Federal court strikes down AL GOP congressional map, orders a second Black opportunity district to be drawn (currently just 1/7 in a 27% Black state). Huge win for plaintiffs/Dems, though this is certainly headed for an appeal to SCOTUS. brennancenterny-my.sharepoint.com/personal/lim_b…
I wrote about this very fight (which deserves more coverage) back in September, when most regarded this ruling as a long shot. It's especially surprising b/c 2/3 of the federal judges on this panel are Trump appointees. theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
@Redistrict The 6 R districts range from R+32 to R+65, Not sure how the map could be drawn to add a second D district... Doing so might swing all seats to the Republicans....
@Redistrict Didn't SCOTUS say they don't normally weigh in on gerrymandering at the state level?
@Redistrict Rucho v. Common Cause doesn't apply here at the SCOTUS level?
@Redistrict The fact that people thought Rs could gerrymander themselves a greater advantage than 2010s is the kind of analysis I've tried to battle x.com/realcarlallen/…
@Redistrict This took me about an hour of tinkering. I'm sure professionals can do a lot better. The blue districts are D+2 and D+1.5 with voting age minority "opportunity" populations of 45% and 49%. I'm not sure why some here think the Alabama GOP is going to draw two safe blue seats.
@Redistrict I assume this won't stand on appeal
@Redistrict Does this court have any new Biden appointees? It would interesting to see if Dem court picks are actually now having an impact.
@Redistrict @galacticasitrep Perhaps the gerrymandering will be kept in check. One can only hope.
