I wish there was a way to help Americans understand that cars *are the pod*. They devour our cities, resources, strength, health, money, time and so many young lives. They blunt the senses. They anonymize. They appeal to our worst instincts and make the worst people powerful.

I’m an infrastructure absolutist. No amount of enforcement, signage, or education will keep drivers from taking whatever amount of public space or safety risks they deem necessary to get around at speed. We need to shape the behaviour we want through physical road design.

By far the most common explanation of car dependency in the US is mass preference. Yet in US cities 100 years ago a small minority of drivers degraded the majority’s preferred transport modes, making them much less useful and contributing to their demise. (data: Atlanta, 1923)
Let’s not forget that our community was designed around a convenient, comfortable, and safe public transit system. It can be that way again if we want—there’s nothing stopping us.

Nothing to see here, just a private for-profit company beta-testing it’s self-driving car algorithms on our public roads, where my child is expected to bike to school. Cool. Cool.

Cities don’t always need more space for peds/bikes/scooters etc. They have the space. They just need less space for cars. 🌃
Utrecht on Saturday afternoon. Busting the 'no car, no business' bullshit like a boss!
Snow never fails to show the ridiculous division of our public spaces. Let's use it to change that! (#sneckdown made by @otucis)
NEW: Montreal Mayor @Val_Plante has unveiled her new 4-year bike plan. Plante's "Vision Vélo" promises at least 200 km of new bikeways will be added to the existing network (which is already the best in North America) over 5 yrs, with 10 “express routes.” mtlblog.com/montreal/montr…
Remember, when the fresh snow flies in your city, it reveals how much we’ve over-designed our streets for cars making them faster & more dangerous, and how much space we could reclaim for people & public life. We call them #sneckdowns. HT @fietsprofessor
We agree, thank you @GrandviewOhio!

I wonder why only 3.4% of commuters in Charlotte use public transit 🤔
Big news
Biking is a wonderful way to connect with your community. We love to see how P.E. teacher and community leader @CoachBalto is making biking fun and accessible for more students in Portland, OR. nowthisnews.com/news/a-teacher…
Looking for someone to help park/retrieve bikes at the Gview Hop this Sat 22 Oct for 1-2 hours. The Hop is from 5-8 pm and we could use help anywhere from 4 pm (to help set up) to 9 pm (tear down complete). Let me know!
With 58% of all trips nationally made by bike, teenagers are among the biggest beneficiaries of Dutch infrastructure. From a young age, they enjoy the freedom of a driver’s license; without the added stress, cost and danger. The scene outside our son’s high school this morning.

When you build cities for people, rather than cars, civic misdemeanors like "jaywalking" and "loitering" become civic virtues.

@JohnLorinc 100%. If you want drivers to not do something, you have to make it physically impossible. See also: unprotected bike lanes, paint-only BRT corridors, turn restrictions, etc.

If children walked to school in our bike lanes, would city leaders still consider paint a good enough barrier?
Why are Dutch bike paths so special? "A network of these wide, safe, connected paths spans the whole country, making it safe for people of all ages to get where they're going, and providing a viable driving alternative to millions." @notjustbikes WATCH: youtu.be/z5dvqhYQACY
Well it's that time of the year again, when our leaders ask kids to be safe going to school instead of making it safe for them. Cue the theatrics!
There will never be a bell loud enough, a helmet strong enough or clothing bright enough to make up for poor infrastructure.
Back to School... Two ways to do the school run. An elementary school in North Carolina vs. one in #Holland.
We don’t justify a bridge by the number of people swimming across a river. We shouldn’t justify a bike lane by the number of people rubbing shoulders with cars. Good street design doesn’t just make those people already cycling safer; it entices many more to get on their bikes.
A little separation makes a big difference 👌🚴♀️
