This is just the start of a file we're building about the rapid transit money the federal govt is giving #HamOnt cbc.ca/news/canada/ha…
Caroline Mulroney, Ontario minister of transportation, and Catherine McKenna, federal minister of infrastructure and communities, will make a virtual announcement at 1 pm. We'll be on that call. I'll tweet during it
We'll be live streaming the 1 pm announcement here: cbc.ca/news/canada/ha…
We're still just waiting for it to start. Again, we'll live stream it here: cbc.ca/news/canada/ha…
It just started. To recap, the federal govt said today it'd help fund rapid transit in #HamOnt. This is a joint announcement with @cathmckenna & Caroline Mulroney, who revived the LRT project in February
Mulroney cancelled LRT in Dec 2019, saying it had grown too expensive for #HamOnt to afford. She struck an independent task force, which recommended rapid transit (LRT or BRT). The province says it'll put $1B into rapid transit here
When the province announced it, it said it needed federal support though & that LRT would only go from McMaster to Gage Park. When Trudeau mentioned rapid transit today, he said McMaster to Eastgate
There's a lot of info about Toronto projects right now. We're just listening for Hamilton
So far, just a lot of Toronto talk. That may be it for this call. We'll stick around in case Hamilton comes up in the questions
McKenna says $10.4B they're discussing today is for Toronto, not Hamilton. She & Mulroney will announce more on Thursday about the Hamilton plan. "Stay tuned," McKenna says
.@TeviahMoro from the Spec just got through & asked if it's true that the announcement will be $1.4B for Hamilton LRT. McKenna says, "I think the Hamilton LRT is a shovel-ready project. That's the condition for this funding"
"Really, stay tuned," McKenna says. "I think it's a very good announcement for the people of Hamilton"
