“Why do you use fiction to escape reality?” Bro, I’ve lived through a recession, two wars and a pandemic. I was a child when 9/11 happened; I watched it unfold live. Escape is a wonderful thing. I pick up a book and I’m free.
@SketchesbyBoze I can really tell by my mood when I don’t have a book going.
@SketchesbyBoze I don't use fiction to escape reality, but to mitigate it. Anna Karenina on my tank while keeping an eye on the East German army. The Winds of War in my pack during a close encounter with Russian commandos. The book didn't save me, tho; that was good ol' American fear and panic.
@SketchesbyBoze Truer words were never spoken📖📚📖📚📖📚📖📚📖📚📖📚📖📚📖
@SketchesbyBoze Reading a book for escapism is totally legitimate. But not all literature is escapist in nature.
@SketchesbyBoze I use reading science fiction as a way to relax & turn my brain off from thinking about everything for a little while
@SketchesbyBoze The great gift my parents gave me was the importance of books and reading - a passport to the universe
@SketchesbyBoze "In using escape in this way the critics have chosen the wrong word, and, what is more, they are confusing, not always by sincere error, the Escape of the Prisoner with the Flight of the Deserter." (JRR Tolkien)
