Crawford was MP for the Irish borough of Dundalk, 1835-7, and perhaps more unexpectedly, for the English borough of Rochdale, 1841-52. We are delighted that Peter Gray will be contributing a biographical article on him for our House of Commons, 1832-68 project.

Our #1832AtoZ continues with D for Diaries, a very useful source for our research. The diary (for 1840-2) of Henry Broadley, Cons MP for Yorkshire's East Riding, provides an invaluable record of the career of this backbench MP. Find out more in our blog: victoriancommons.wordpress.com/2015/03/30/the…
Thomas Spring Rice was mentioned as an MP who successfully asked for a 'call of the house' for a debate. But what does this mean? @TheVictCommons Click below: ow.ly/v4it50IEgH5
#MPMonday today has a very suitable name... Thomas Spring Rice! 💐 MP for Limerick 1820-1832 and Cambridge 1832-1839, Rice served as Sec. State for War and later Chancellor of the Exchequer under Melbourne. Read his 1820-32 biography here: ow.ly/V70350IEf4Y
For #NationalTeaDay find out about a prime tea-drinking spot in Parliament: Bellamy's. Read about the popular refreshment rooms here: ow.ly/5j4T50EmjxL @pseaward1
Died #OnThisDay 1837 John Blackburne, Liberal MP for Huddersfield, 1834-7. He had played an important role in the reform of municipal government in 1835. There’s more about this new system of local elections in this blog from our editor Philip Salmon: victoriancommons.wordpress.com/2015/10/16/180…
This is a rather lovely item - the Earl of Arundel, a moderate Whig in politics, was MP for Arundel at the time.

We are delighted to have been alerted to this amazing costume, owned by Edward Strutt, who in 1853 was MP for Nottingham (but had also sat for Derby and Arundel - see @HistParl's pre-1832 biography here: historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1820-18…).

Died #OnThisDay1857 Joseph Holdsworth, a prosperous dyer who was elected as Liberal MP for his native Wakefield in 1841. In an unusual case, he was unseated because he was technically the returning officer, as our blog explains: victoriancommons.wordpress.com/2013/03/26/mp-…
Robert Spankie, born #OnThisDay 1774, followed an unusual career path, from reporting on parliamentary debates in the 1790s to speaking in them as an MP in the 1830s. Find out more in our blog: victoriancommons.wordpress.com/2020/01/27/fro…
Henry Austin Bruce, Liberal MP for Merthyr Tydfil, 1852-68, & Renfrewshire. 1869-73, was born #OnThisDay 1815. His many official roles included serving as Home Secretary, 1868-73, President @AberUni & President @RoyalHistSoc 1878-91. He was created Baron Aberdare in 1873.
The former MP William Bankes, a noted explorer and Egyptologist, died #OnThisDay 1855. In 1841 he had fled England to avoid prosecution for homosexual offences. Our blog explores his life and political career: thehistoryofparliament.wordpress.com/2019/02/26/fro…
Died #OTD 1866, Sir Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood. The MP for Preston 1832-1847 founded and gave his name to the seaside town of Fleetwood in Lancashire. Find out more about his career and legacy in this blog from @TheVictCommons 👇 ow.ly/bylz50IENf6

Here’s a fascinating one for any map nerds like me. 😊
With the Rochdale by-election taking place today, here's some of our research on the constituency's 19th century electoral history. We start with Rochdale's unusual electoral boundary after 1832: the only English constituency with a circular boundary.
We at the History of Parliament are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Lord Cormack, who was a determined and stalwart supporter of our project throughout his career. One of our longest serving Trustees ever, he was Chairman of the Trust from 2002 to 2017.
