Members of @TorontoACORN from Havenbrook rallied against unlivable conditions by Medallion Corporation. They gathered 52 signatures, 12 work orders, and protested PAID visitor parking sign removal. The peaceful protest faced seven police cars, highlighting misallocated resources.

Rent control Isn’t this a provincial issue, you ask? Well, ACORN is demanding that on the municipal level, any developments getting municipal public funds must have rent control including vacancy control on all units.

Affordable internet End the digital divide! Funding for free Wifi on transit, public owned fibre in all 65,000 new housing units built, and a city or community controlled broadband system is a necessary step.

Community funding We need to put money back into our communities! We need affordable community programs everywhere, reallocation of 10% of the police budget to community programs for equity seeking groups, and support for Community Benefits Agreements.

Affordable housing We are in desperate need of affordable housing in Toronto. Steps to take include more MURA funding, funds for management of co ops, land trusts, and non profit housing, higher % of IZ and vacant unit tax, and much more.

Landlord licensing & RentSafe This is huge! Key points include doubling the fees for landlords under RentSafe, more inspectors and enforcement, fines with major financial penalties for negligent landlords, DineSafe style signs, and a rent escrow account.

No tenant displacement The City needs to take urgent action to protect tenants from displacement. This includes creating and strengthening demoviction & renoviction protections as well as removing financial incentives for landlords to displace tenants.

Beat the Heat & Retrofits The urgent nature of the climate crisis and retrofitting Toronto's ageing highrise communities from a resident-led perspective is an important step in achieving energy equity. The city needs to fund a comprehensive climate justice framework.
