Having to create on a schedule as family members live through the horrors of poverty—the constant threat of violence, hunger, eviction, arrest, and death—is not made easier by the fact that my creations have taken me many steps away from that same poverty.
Speaking of this…my relationship to writing this year has been “mercurial” to say the least…bursts of sudden confidence and long swaths of days / weeks of malaise and repulsion. This was in no small part to the debilitating and frustrating dynamic of being a writer w a life.
Yesterday I had a Zoom call with a famous AfroLatina actress who told me she has been trying to get the rights to one of my books for 20 years. I had repeatedly told my TV/film agents I wanted to work with her. Her handlers and my handlers never introduced us. 1/
