MLB doing everything in its power to get Aaron Judge to 62 just so we never have to hear from Roger Maris Jr. again.
@Jared_Carrabis So what we need to understand here, OBR doesn't define what a check swing is. This is what we, as umpires, use to determine whether or not it was a swing. Did he make an attempt to strike at the pitch? Just because the bat "went around" here, doesn't mean he swung at the pitch
@JoeTheUmpire @Jared_Carrabis It looked like he attempted to swing, backed off because the pitch was coming in on him and continued his follow through. Should still be a strike because of the initial attempt though.
@ImCaptHindsight @Jared_Carrabis Are you saying because the bat went around? That’s not an attempt at the pitch. Hence why Dan, who is one of the best in the game, said no swing.
@JoeTheUmpire @ImCaptHindsight @Jared_Carrabis Are you kidding me? Bat crossed the plane established by home plate. That’s a full ass swing right there.
@baseballdood @JoeTheUmpire @ImCaptHindsight @Jared_Carrabis The bat crossing a plane has nothing to do with a swing. A swing is an attempt to hit a pitch. He was never attempting to hit the ball. He was trying to avoid being hit.
@wsucougs2000 @JoeTheUmpire @ImCaptHindsight @Jared_Carrabis Do you not watch baseball? Players regularly get hit by pitches and a swing is called because the bat crossed the plane while they tried to avoid getting hit. It happens at least once a year. The definition of a swing has zero to do with intent to swing.
@baseballdood @JoeTheUmpire @ImCaptHindsight @Jared_Carrabis There is absolutely no wording about anything about crossing any plane. That’s a myth people have made up over time. Players are called for a swing when they get hit because they offered at the pitch. Judge clearly made no attempt to hit this pitch so by rule it’s not a swing.
@baseballdood @JoeTheUmpire @ImCaptHindsight @Jared_Carrabis No I never watch baseball, I just have been umpiring high school and college ball for 15 years. 🤦♂️ The definition of a swing directly from the rule book, “a swing is an attempt at a pitch. It’s up to the judgement of the umpire if the batter attempted at a pitch.”
