In 2015, police shot Keith Davis several times during a robbery investigation. Davis was acquitted of the robbery, but arrested just a week later on unrelated murder charges—for which he claimed police were framing him to cover up the fact that they had mistakenly shot him. (1/3)
Innocent Black people are many times more likely than white people to be convicted of serious crimes and wrongfully imprisoned in America. Check out this thread and the Registry's updated report on race and wrongful conviction: bit.ly/RaceReportNRE
In 1931, two white women falsely accused a group of nine Black teens and young men of rape. Just three days after their trials began, eight of the nine “Scottsboro Boys” had been found guilty by an all-white jury and sentenced to death. (1/4)
"Every day, people are being coerced to plead guilty rather than go to trial, even if we are innocent. The threat of the chaos and brutality in jails like Rikers is so great that a guilty plea becomes the only rational choice." bit.ly/3fOyVRd
The best Habeas litigator around, Michael Ausbrook @IUHabeas, just secured Elkhart’s sixth exoneration. Welcome home, DeWayne Dunn. 👏👏👏 @IUHabeas A town of less than 50,000 now has SIX exonerees.
The State just filed notice that it's not going to retry our client, Dewayne Dunn—won in the 7th by @IUMaurerLaw '22 student @alex_dowland. That makes it an exoneration. Wowza. #StudentsRock Should be able to get Dewayne actually out on Monday! youtu.be/_-xmC0YXCXc?t=…
And thanks @exonerationlist for data about CIUs. Prosecutor elections matter.
Adnan Syed now has an entry in @exonerationlist!⬇️
Adnan Syed was sentenced to life in prison in 2000 for the murder of Hae Min Lee in Baltimore, Maryland. He was exonerated in 2022, in part based on the work of the podcasts Serial and Undisclosed in uncovering new evidence of his innocence. (1/3)

A concerning new report from @exonerationlist finds that Black Americans are seven times more likely than white Americans to be wrongly convicted of serious crimes, and this racial disparity exists in varying degrees across nearly all major crime categories.
“The worst miscarriages of justice any system can produce—the conviction or death sentence of an innocent person—are largely driven by racism in the U.S., a new report by the National Registry of Exonerations shows.” reuters.com/legal/governme…
