A fire at Worlebury Golf Course Weston-super-Mare in 1913 was blamed on “militant suffragettes” since “two women unknown to the area had been seen in a car earlier that day”. Women at the wheel of a car?Heaven forfend. The Mercury later admitted a stove was the most likely cause.

@WestCountryWRN Can you find out about the suffragettes who burnt down the boathouse in Eastville Park?
@geri115 We can’t be sure they did. A suffragette newspaper was found nearby but at best, that’s just circumstantial evidence. To be clear, we do not condone anyone breaking the law so when we relate these stories, we try to focus on what happened when women exercised their lawful rights.
