@hilaryburkitt The fundamental misframing of how #BenefitCap operates and always has operated by academics and researchers misses the crucial systemic flaws in the policy. Max housing benefit has been cut by >60% from 2013 to 2024 and this is what they miss
@hilaryburkitt 2/ IF the 2CL not imposed in FY1617 then hundreds of thousands more benefit households with children would have been homeless by today. Abolishing it now but keeping overall #BenefitCap has the effect above that would see hundreds of thousands MORE children in TA
@housingpaul @NickBano same scenario of couple 2 child benefit household and next two financial years -#BenefitCap means arrears to eviction into homeless TA = greater LA £ of it = no more benefit households getting #socialhousing = PSLs upping £ of the more TA needed which LAs have to bear
@Mark_ED_Lowe @dineen20dineen Number 1 the only important #housing single as it describes the social housing model, the homeless resettlement model and the DVA refuge model due to #BenefitCap and its maximum year on year cut to housing benefit. Still #ukhousing stuck in 1975 it hardly a surprise is it!?
@Jantaran Absolute piffle ... unfortunately. As housing benefit won't cover cheapest social rent due to #BenefitCap who will afford it!!?? Couple & 2 Child benefit household gets £409pcm max when 2 bed social rent averages £465pcm in England #ukhousing
Also the first welfare reform mitigations package includes mitigation of the #BenefitCap which must continue beyond its current sunset clause of 2025.
@housingpaul Thee 'small' household of a couple with two kids gets £409pcm as #BenefitCap maximum allowed in housing benefit (LHA or UC version) The average 2 bed at cheapest social rent level now £465pcm. Benefit households in TA have nowhere to go to and #Homelessness numbers only going up
@justinbates28 For whom? The majority of those populating waiting lists and #Homeless TA are benefit households so look at the % cuts to housing benefit from #BenefitCap for fully occupying the cheapest 2 bed social rent for a couple and two children #AffordabilityNotSupply
Great to see charities coming together to challenge politicians over the #TwoChildLimit. Along with the #BenefitCap, this awful policy is a key driver of child poverty. If he wants to repeat Blair/Brown's success in lifting families out of poverty, @Keir_Starmer has to scrap them

End 2 child #benefitcap theguardian.com/society/2024/a…
@Simplicitly @Channel4News @RachelReevesMP The #BenefitCap abolish 2CL outcome = #homelessness (FY2324 figures) ... but hey why let fact get in the way of a bit of moral outrage
Labour urged to scrap two-child benefit cap amidst child poverty concerns noah-news.com/gb/en/politics… #LabourParty #childpoverty #benefitcap
"I normally have the kids' leftovers. I don't even remember the last time I had a proper lunch." Parents' letter to MPs to ask that the #BenefitCap and the #TwoChildLimit are scrapped. Ministers and MPs: stop starving children! youtube.com/watch?v=8kW-Rh…
The chronically innumerate #ukhousing mantra of 'build more bloody social housing' simply cannot work due to #BenefitCap and worse than NO DSS medium.com/@SpeyeJoe/who-… The "Housing Crisis" will get much worse if 90k built per year @hillsidepaul @tomemurtha and RIP #SocialHousing
@hillsidepaul @Simplicitly @tomemurtha 2/ YET .... the 'sector' is both oblivious to this and does not demand #BenefitCap is abolished. Instead it demands build build build with no consideration of the systemic affordability problem. Craven and negligent and any reporting of SRS rent inaffordability gets deflected
@hillsidepaul @Simplicitly @tomemurtha Social rent is 100% dependent on affordability for its target tenant, those who cant afford to buy or rent privately ... who can no longer afford social housing so won't get it. Cart before horse and the systemic problem of #BenefitCap has to go else building more is futile 1/
@hillsidepaul @Simplicitly @tomemurtha No. My solution is get rid of #BenefitCap as it excludes those 'most in housing need' from social housing as fact! The #ukhousing 'sector' ignores affordability with its just build bloody social housing mantra that will NOT solve housing/homeless/waitinglist crises
@hillsidepaul @Simplicitly @tomemurtha Chronic deflection and continuation of SRS landlord ostrich syndrome. Social Rent can only be for pensioners or in-work only whilst #BenefitCap remains
