Until we start talking about all the issues with #tcrwp UoS, this is what we are going to find: Piecemeal and patched changes by districts.
What does it mean when major trade journals are edited by folks with perspectives like “mandates to improve your curriculum are eugenics” while encouraging districts to stick with #TCRWP and Reading Recovery?

@neagschool I could go on about Gabriel’s flawed takes. They warrant discussion BC too many reasonable people treat her like a legit academic. She has been quoted in @DanaGoldstein’s reporting. And she is influential among #TCRWP holdouts, giving districts an academic fig leaf for their…
@neagschool Did I mention that Gabriel is on a Reading Recovery Board, she is collaborating with Calkins’s new institute right now, and she has been active in CT helping districts seeking waivers for the mandate to replace #TCRWP? But you probably guessed that.
leave it to the @WeAreCTA to call BS keeping in mind these are some of the same issues that got Lucy Calkins at #TCRWP got into, ESL and special needs were not being serviced kqed.org/news/11982196/… #edchat #reading #writing
And who’s sharing it? Gay Su Pinnell’s PR dollars are hard at work, spreading the word. One senses a growing collaboration between the #TCRWP leaders, @FountasPinnell founders, Reading Recovery folks, and Gabriel, long known to be a strong supporter of all of the above.
The question people are asking: Who’s still using #TCRWP and @FountasPinnell? The Q they should be asking: When did basals come to dominate, and what are the issues with that? Really, review this data. 👀

What do we know about the continued use of #TCRWP and @FountasPinnell? Not a lot, but here are some assorted data points: @careads @mandy_mclaren @NaomiMartin @CLPeak @ehanford @OhioGadfly @educationgadfly

@FountasPinnell @BostonGlobe @mandy_mclaren @NaomiMartin The @careads sample of California districts showed only 9% of districts using #TCRWP and @FountasPinnell combined. Its sample is a little older, typically reflecting curriculum used as of 2020-21, I believe, but sometimes the data reflected 21-22: careads.org/curric-report-…
@FountasPinnell Also for the 22-23 school year, @BostonGlobe reporting showed 33% of districts using #TCRWP + @FountasPinnell, in a state that was a longtime balanced literacy stalwart. HT @mandy_mclaren @NaomiMartin. 🙏 bostonglobe.com/2023/10/04/met…
What do we know? Let’s discuss. Only 5 states publish curricula used by districts, which is why I dropped everything to write about the indicators in Ohio (a representative state, I’d say): eduvaites.org/2024/03/25/ohi… #TCRWP + @FountasPinnell: ~13% as of ‘22-23 school year.
@rrcna_org @HeinemannPub @FountasPinnell @ehanford @CLPeak @natwexler All signs – in Ohio and beyond – suggest #TCRWP @FountasPinnell districts are most likely to move to basal programs from big publishers, which are surging in market share. These are NOT high-quality structured literacy options. @CurriculumIP will soon report on this, too.
@rrcna_org @HeinemannPub Great to have this indicator, BC we lack data sources on curriculum use by district. Only 5 states have published data openly. That said, they’ve clearly been losing share in recent years. And we’ve watched #TCRWP & @FountasPinnell fail to make state adoption lists this year.
.@MassGovernor makes understands that some districts are clinging to #TCRWP and @FountasPinnell, and it seems that she is having none of it.

I saw this in my own school district: #TCRWP-devotee district leaders proclaiming their embrace of SOR to parents and school board. But sending home sight word lists for kids to practice over summer.

Lucy Calkins this week: “I have always been a proponent of… direct, explicit instruction.” @natwexler calls her bluff, with receipts. An illuminating look into #TCRWP Units of Study writing instruction: open.substack.com/pub/nataliewex…
@CurriculumIP @BenisonMrs @DDGA13 @dyslexiasomd @MrZachG @MJLiben @arotherham This morning, I wrote about the basal surge, evident in Ohio’s data and its adoption. When Calkins asserts that schools are moving from #TCRWP to basals, rather than high-quality programs, she kinda has a point. eduvaites.org/2024/03/25/ohi…
@CurriculumIP But I’ll take this moment to remind everyone that Calkins is absolutely going to attempt to equate basals with “snippets of books” with the alternative to #TCRWP. And she’ll exploit (reasonable) Educator push-back on basals.
A Tale of Two Wisconsin Districts: One is still using #TCRWP UoS, no plans to stop. One has a supt who thinks it’s illegal. State has no ability to tell either district what to do.
