@idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel Under what assumption do you make that statement? Which climate models predict conditions that you think will lead to total social collapse?
@notkavi @biggestjoel I'm not just talking about climate, I'm talking about general trends toward authoritarianism, war, and (specifically in the US) paramilitary groups. but I'm pretty sure the countries that are going to be mostly or totally under water aren't going to just be fine
@idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel Every single one of those non climate related trends could have been projected out from like 1950 or 1980 — this idea that things are uniquely bad now requires some evidence beyond the fact that bad things are happening
@notkavi @biggestjoel what kind of evidence would you find convincing?
@idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel I think a comparison of the trends now to the trends in the past would be helpful. E.g., how is the current authoritarian movement in Brazil/USA different from past South American/US authoritarian movements
@notkavi @idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel 1/ Some differences: * euphemistic racism has regressed back to more blatant forms * disinformation spreads much faster and completely unchecked by social media * traditional media is more polarized, less trusted, and incapable of countering disinformation * stochastic terrorism
@notkavi @idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel 2/ * fascist infiltration of one of the two major parties of the most powerful country in the world * concerted efforts by that party to reshape election laws and officials to permanently consolidate power in the face of growing unpopularity
@notkavi @idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel 3/ * a US supreme court willing to toss all credibility and precedent to roll back social justice and women's rights * supply chain shocks that will continue to happen and accelerate from the pandemic and climate change * US Congress paralyzed, incapable of addressing anything
@notkavi @idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel 4/ IMO it all adds up to continued fascist recruitment and a very real chance of a takeover of the most powerful military ten times over. Fascist kleptocracies forming in the face of not one but TWO global catastrophes.
@notkavi @idkboiiiiis @biggestjoel 5/ And if the fascists *don't* take power, the current alternatives don't seem interested in or capable of fighting either catastrophe. If they were, they couldn't do jack shit because of the disinformation landscape and legislative gridlock. I don't see the way out of this.
@DubbaEwwTeeEff @notkavi @biggestjoel This is the big one for me--governments are not invested in ending climate change. I truly don't believe anything significant will be done.
