10 years ago I would have sworn that I WAS teaching explicitly. That was before I started using Direct Instruction and learnt what explicit teaching CAN look like. Students are more engagement & actively learning. ALL students should be able to benefit from explicit teaching.

My sense is that many teachers *say* they teach explicitly & then are taken aback by its pace & interactivity when they see it.

‘Inherent risks’: academics push back against NSW ed dept's explicit instruction drive in the latest ed of EducationHQ. As I sigh & read on I see I am quoted. I wonder whether these academics have read the TEEP recommendations that now must be included in ITE courses?
@jdtdobson I also want to make sure I clarify… student will learn things we don’t teach—even if we are doing great teaching. It’s not “despite” the teacher it’s “plus” the teacher.
@jdtdobson I am definitely not arguing against explicit teaching… in my undergrad class on lesson planning, Archer & Hughes is the only required textbook! We definitely need to consider carefully how we design instruction to maximize effect—which very often means EI but not always or only

My sense is that many teachers *say* they teach explicitly & then are taken aback by its pace & interactivity when they see it.

A 🧵 on explicit instruction, in light of the NSW announcement. 1: I would have not only told you I was teaching explicitly in my first years of teaching, but been highly offended if you had suggested I wasn’t. Spoiler alert: I was giving one explicit instruction 1/
@tenaciousKat @PamelaSnow2 @tserry2504 @NathanielRSwain I hope I didn't say that. A minority of children do seem to learn to read even with low-quality instruction, but most children do need to be taught reading systematically, because it is biologically secondary.
@tenaciousKat @PamelaSnow2 @tserry2504 @NathanielRSwain Just to be clear, if I said that reading was not biologically secondary I mis-spoke: I have never believed this and it's clearly untrue. Extending Snow and Juel (2005), formal teaching of reading is harmful to none, helpful to all, and essential for some.
@NatashaLMercer @markp_bennett @aliceleung Building on the myth of teacher talk, one of the big shocks for me was how often students need to talk/participate in Explicit Instruction. Checking for Understanding every 1-3mins was an eye-opener but an absolute game changer. Also the hinge point prior to independent practice.
