One of my happiest memories involves sitting third-row center gazing up at Barbara Cook—then 76—as she revisited "Ice Cream"—in the original key—in Mostly Sondheim.
A favorite Barbara Cook story: "Ice Cream" was an out-of-town replacement. She heard it once and insisted it go into the show that same night (She figured since her character was writing a letter she could have the lyrics with her) They made it happen. And she stopped the show.
@kevinddaly I met her once, in 2009 - her son, Adam LeGrant, who just passed away this week, directed a play I was in. She was an angel and she told me, sotto voce, that she loved watching “American Idol.” And Adam was a jewel and a joy. He will be dearly missed.
@kevinddaly I had that experience too- unforgettable. That woman could cast a spell, and I can STILL feel the timber of her gorgeous voice in my ear.
@kevinddaly BTW - here's the 1978 tv version: youtube.com/watch?v=db_Hre…
@kevinddaly I saw Mostly Sondheim at the Lyric Theatre - first time I got to see Barbara Cook live on stage. What an evening! I’ll never forget it. The artistry of each song was incredible and she opened her heart in each song in a way I’d never seen before. Chills! Glad it’s on DVD. 😍
@kevinddaly Are you sure she kept it in the original key throughout because I think In the later recording of it she modulates in the middle
@kevinddaly Oh my, did she sound incredible and captivating doing Mostly Sondheim.
