Many of my Republican colleagues have joined Congressman John Lewis to commemorate the march from Selma to Montgomery.
But today they won’t even allow the Senate to consider legislation named in his honor—and have called this bill ‘radical.’
Republicans claim the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is radical. Let's talk about what this bill does:
✔️require early voting & vote by mail options
✔️make Election Day a holiday
✔️crack down on voter intimidation
✔️require post-election audits
How is any of this radical?
Before Trump, Republicans at least pretended their laws weren’t blatantly discriminatory.
Now they don't even try to hide the fact that they're making it incredibly difficult for people of color, elderly individuals, students, working families, & people w/ disabilities to vote.
Republicans are passing bills to close polling locations, limit voting hours, remove drop-boxes, and even make it illegal to hand a voter in line a bottle of water.
I truly want to know how you can even pretend to justify that law? This is voter suppression plain and simple.
If we don't protect the right to vote, we won’t have a democracy—it’s that simple, that’s the reality.
Since Republicans will not lift a finger to protect voting rights we have no option but to change the Senate rules. #EliminateTheFilibustertwitter.com/SenateDems/sta…
While Republicans do nothing to protect our freedom to vote in the face of mass voter suppression bills enacted across the country, we Democrats cannot sit back and let 2020 be the last free and fair election in this country. #EliminateTheFilibuster
Our country’s legacy of racial discrimination in voting is undeniable. And it’s undeniable that we are witnessing history repeat itself today.
If we want to honor Dr. King’s legacy, we must pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. #MLKDay
But this year, instead of coming together to commemorate these civil rights achievements, we are fighting a battle we thought was won decades ago.
Republicans have introduced hundreds of bills across the country intended to make it harder for certain people to vote.
For the first time in 6 months 150,000 families across Hawaii won’t see the #ChildTaxCredit deposited in their bank accounts this month.
The Child Tax Credit has lifted millions of children out of poverty.
We must pass #BuildBackBetter and restore these lifeline payments.
Democrats cannot sit back and let 2020 be the last free and fair election in this country
The easy way out is to sit back and do nothing
If we don't protect the right to vote, we won’t have a democracy—it’s that simple
While Republicans continue to downplay January 6
These charges confirm it was nothing short of an attempt to overthrow the government
The insurrectionists need to be treated for what they are:
Domestic Terrorists twitter.com/nytimes/status…
Republicans continue to downplay what happened on January 6th.
One even went on Fox News to APOLOGIZE for calling the insurrection what it was: a violent terrorist attack.
This dangerous normalization of domestic terrorism needs to stop.
.@POTUS asked all of us—do you want to be on the side of:
Dr. King or George Wallace?
John Lewis or Bull Connor?
Abraham Lincoln or Jefferson Davis?
I know what side I'm on...
It's time for ALL of us to step up, save democracy, and #EliminateTheFilibuster
It baffles me that anyone is debating whether or not this was domestic terrorism.
If we pretend that January 6th didn’t happen, one of the darkest days in our country’s history, we stand little chance in protecting our democracy.
Thanks to the #AmericanRescuePlan Hawaii will receive a record amount of $9.7 million to help those struggling to pay their energy bills.
Proud to have championed this effort to help keep the lights and heat on for millions of Americans throughout the country.
Thanks to Democrats and the #AmericanRescuePlan we are seeing record shattering numbers in:
People getting back to work
When Democrats come together we deliver strong for the American people. twitter.com/WhiteHouse/sta…
We cannot sit back and let one political party continue to unravel the threads of our democracy, one voter suppression bill at a time.
As long as the right to vote is under attack, so too is our democracy.
Today we pay tribute to the Capitol Police, DC Metro Police, national guard, & all who acted bravely & quickly that day to save lives
We must honor their service by doing our part to protect democracy and pass voting rights legislation
