2 days agoThis is another example of a "non-political" public health program started under the #Trump administration (I funded the first $50 million) and carried on now by Dr. Cohen. Wastewater has huge potential to help in outbreaks, microbial resistance, and even fight opioid overdoses! twitter.com/CDCDirector/st…

2 days ago@barttels2 4 years later still annoys me that it happened that way. Surprised me that certain scientists would deny what we knew just to make their own work appear more novel

3 days ago@pelagicbird @JamesGWood_UNSW @jbloom_lab Exactly. It was a Type 2 error "They all work about the same" when there are real differences

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
4 days agoYes, a strategy based on simple mechanism and logic (vaccinate to what exists) does actually work, just as it does for flu. No need to overthink things (as FDA did with the bivalent). twitter.com/jbloom_lab/sta…

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
4 days ago@JamesGWood_UNSW @jbloom_lab I don't believe that's true. IIRC there was no stat diff seen between bivalents and monovalents, but variance was high so it was a type 2 error. This happens all the time in science/med but FDA in particular seems to like making this kind of error due to mission bias

4 days agoI wanted to highlight this pre-print by David Ho’s group on the neutralizing antibody response to new (XBB.1.5-based) COVID vaccine booster, as it illustrates some points related to paradigm of updating SARS-CoV-2 vaccines to keep pace w viral evolution. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

5 days ago@Tortured_Verse @selise I didn't say whom I'm voting for if Biden is the nominee. Just reporting what the polls report how others say they will vote.

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
5 days ago@Tortured_Verse @selise Just saying that "you're take what we provide because we're the private Democratic Party, not a democratic party" is not a great line

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
5 days ago@Tortured_Verse @selise If the D Party wants to ignore the wishes of those who usually support them because they are a private org, let them come out and say that. We'll see 3rd-party candidates take a large fraction of the usual D votes. But last I heard they were claiming to safeguard democracy.

6 days ago@D12Dale I understand many are hesitant about mRNA. Luckily Novavax is now available. Made with traditional vaccine technology! 👍🏽 ama-assn.org/delivering-car…

Daniel Park @Daniel_E_Park
a week agoAdditional evidence showing generally lower reactogenicity with Novavax. If you or someone you know has concerns about COVID vaccine side effects, this may be a good option for you. Excellent efficacy as well. academic.oup.com/jid/advance-ar…

5 days agoThe moment Biden announces he will not seek reelection, his approval rating would jump to >60%. Flattering articles on him and his accomplishments would follow, easing the way for the next candidate. It would cement a positive legacy and outcome. Will he be wise enough to do it?

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
6 days ago@JoeBiden Biden is a repeat of Bush senior. Gentlemanly, well liked globally, leader of a democratic alliance against unprovoked aggression, but not aware when people are upset about the price of milk.

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
6 days ago6mo after I suggested it, @JoeBiden is finally criticizing corporations for fueling inflation by price-gouging. But speaking out only after the companies have pocketed the profits, and everyone already knows it, just adds to the impression of being out of touch.

7 days agoLike me or not, I engage with others - and respectfully- more than any other current or former health official. So it’s disheartening when people resort to rudeness, and then call me the bad guy when I block them.🤷🏽♂️ Let's try to foster constructive dialogue & mutual respect.🙏🏽

7 days agoFinally the study is of the original Wuhan-strain Novavax as booster, while testing against Omicron strains, not the current XBB booster

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
7 days agoThat p value should have been written right on the graph, as below, since all the other comparisons were made.
BTW the baseline against BA.2 is also imbalanced even if it doesn't meet 95% significance. A t test of differences is not the proper test to rule in similarity actually

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
7 days ago@pelagicbird @inkblue01 7.9 vs 13.5 is about the same

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
7 days agoIndeed the baseline difference against BA.5 antibodies has a p value of 0.002. Which means there was a 1 in 500 chance of happening by chance. Since the groups were created by randomization, the authors got very unlucky or there was a flaw in the randomization process.

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
7 days agoThis has come up in comments 3 times now. Unless I missed something, this is a flawed study.
Baseline Abs of NVX vs RNA subjects are imbalanced, despite all having the same prior vax history. Hard to interpret outcome differences.
BTW the fold boost 1 mo later is about the same twitter.com/inkblue01/stat…

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
7 days ago@inkblue01 The baseline Abs of NVX vs RNA subjects are imbalanced, despite all having had the same prior vax history. Hard to know the meanings of outcome differences then.
BTW the fold boost after 28 days is about the same, which is better than expected for NVX.

Michael Lin, MD PhD 🧬 @michaelzlin
