play_circle_filled Video by @paulnicklen | Some people call me an activist. I don't know how you can be anything else. When you stand in the presence of a wolf and look into their eyes, how can you not vow to protect all that they are and all that they represent? If caring for wildlife and nature makes me an activist, then I am proud to call myself one. The alternative—to be inactive—is unfathomable for me. Follow me @PaulNicklen for more videos like this one, and to find out how you can become a part of a powerful movement to create healthy and abundant oceans with my team at @SeaLegacy. #TurningTheTide #ExtinctionEndsHere #VideoOfTheDay #SeaWolf

This snake will coil and stand its ground when threatened, rattling the end of its tail rapidly as a warning sign for any creature coming too close to stay away. Photo by @gerdludwig | Hoping to rejuvenate body and soul, a devout Russian Orthodox Christian briefly submerges herself into the icy waters of Yekaterinburg.
On January 18—the eve of Russian Orthodox Epiphany (the church follows the Julian calendar)—thousands of Russians prepare for an annual tradition: gathering on frozen rivers and lakes to take a dip in the icy priest-blessed waters. This ceremony is believed to cleanse the soul of sins and protect the faithful from evil. According to Orthodox Christian tradition, this January feast day celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. @thephotosociety @natgeoimagecollection #RussianEpiphany #RussianOrthodox

Photo by David Guttenfelder @dguttenfelder | A venomous scorpion, glowing under blue ultraviolet lights and a red headlamp, is found inside a national park in central Vietnam. Collecting venom from around the world, biomedical scientist Zoltan Takacs hopes to identify new pain medications because there are currently few good alternatives to opioids. Venom has already led to one notable success when scientists derived a drug for chronic pain from another of the world’s deadliest animals: the cone snail. For more please see our @natgeo January 2020 issue story,

photo_library Photo and video by @carltonward | I set up one of my camera traps along this trail beside an ancient cypress tree for more than a year and only got two visits by a panther during that entire time, and only once facing my camera. As luck would have it, a Florida black bear knocked over two of flashes and bumped my trigger the week before. So this beautiful female panther is a bit more mysterious than I wanted: the bear knocked over the left flash, leaving the right side of her face dark. And she's a bit further from the camera than I'd like because the bear misaligned the trigger. But I am still quite happy with the moment, a gift of capturing a rare panther walking in the shadow of this 500-year-old cypress on Green Glades West ranch, next to Big Cypress National Preserve. The video gives a behind the scenes view of the curious cat. photo_library Photo by Michael Yamashita @yamashitaphoto | The ancient citadel Arg-e Bam was the largest monument made of clay bricks in the world—until it was reduced to rubble in a 2003 earthquake (this image was taken in 1999). Its heyday was from the 7th to the 11th centuries, when Bam sat at a crossroads of major east-west trade routes of the Silk Road. Efforts are on going to rebuild and restore this UNESCO World Heritage Site. #Bam #Iran #argebam #bamcitadel #citade
