Not sure if there's a word that mixes pride with anxiousness. I'm... Pranxious, I guess? And I'm excited for the future of the show too. Because I could have packed it up, never to return. Instead, I decided..
So while I'm nervous, anxious, and probably have an ulcer on the way due to how concerned I am about my financial future, those experiences genuinely matter to me - and apparently to other people too.
I also got to have @johnhollinger and @HowardBeck on the show, which I absolutely loved. (One listener walked up to me on the street and told me that listening to a conversation between Howard and me - his two favorite NBA people - was a dream come true for him.)
During these two years, I secured soundbites from: Adam Silver, Victor Wembanyama, Gregg Popovich, Mark Tatum, Brandon Miller, Deron Williams, Taylor Hendricks, Jett Howard, Anthony Black, Cason Wallace, and Jordan Hawkins. I'm insanely proud of that.
And I also realized what I achieved in the two years I had the show. I actually made history. This was the first weekly NBA radio show in Denmark. Ever. I was the first person in Danish media to attend the draft last year too.
In fact, I've been overwhelmed with wonderful messages in recent weeks, from people all the country, telling me about how they listen when they're shopping, at the gym, mowing the lawn, working.. And they all tell me they're following me wherever I go.
However, in the middle of all this stress, I did find comfort in one thing. The program wasn't canceled because I was inadequate, or in any way lacking. The radio station is pivoting, and basketball just wasn't on the agenda anymore. It had nothing to do with me.
The program will continue as a podcast, and I'll be going into crowdfunding. But even through the most optimistic perspective I'm YEARS away from being able to earn a similar amount per episode as I did at the radio.
I just lost 90% of my income, and starting in July, I genuinely have no idea if my wife and I will be able to make rent. We have two kids. No, I'm not OK. I'm fucking terrified.
I believe it's a problem that we tend to ask those questions, without being ready for an actual answer. And I think it's especially odd that people seem to expect someone who's just been KO'ed to, well, actually be ok!
For one, it's been expected of me to be brave, and in high spirits. I decided to not meet those expectations. When people asked me "How are you doing?" I'd be honest and tell them "I feel like actual shit, and my anxiety is through the roof". Constantly took people off-guard.
As some of you know, I don't mind being vulnerable on this app from time to time. Well, that time is now. About a month ago, my Danish NBA radio show was canceled. It stings, and I want to talk about how the last month has been for me. 🧵
