@tehlike @rabois @jeremyzorn What are they supposed to say? They can't condemn tech development that we engage in broadly, it's not a policy goal to reduce hypersonics, and there isn't much leverage anyways.
@zachtratar @tehlike @jeremyzorn This missile is specifically designed to decapitate the US government, and especially the White House. We do not welcome competition. She would probably welcome competition when Hitler invaded Poland under your logic.
@rabois @tehlike @jeremyzorn Keith - is this really the claim? I'm all in favor of US strength and playing this smart. IMO the above argument is weirdly flimsy and doesn't propose an alternative that's better. What is the right thing to say?
@zachtratar @tehlike @jeremyzorn read the US reaction to the USSR development of an h bomb.
@ScotchGuyDan @rabois @tehlike @jeremyzorn I've been doing more research and talking to more experts. It's wild how vague/misleading most media written about this is... often conflates hypersonic glide vehicles with hypersonic ICBMs. Realizing now how big of a step this was. Still not sure the best "one-liner" response.
@ScotchGuyDan @rabois @tehlike @jeremyzorn China presented 250 papers on 2017 alone on hypersonic research. We've known they were moving faster for a while. What the fuck was the DoD doing?
