Brownie is a master of this! You won’t find the blazing linear phrases or insane technical flourishes, but you will find a rock-solid riddim locked in so hard with the drums that you can’t help but dance. He does so much to provide a foundation for Barber/Mags. So underrated!
Simply put, you can make a compelling bassline using the other elements and a single note, but no virtuosic flurry of scales will groove without the other elements. Where you play on the beat, the way you pluck/mute the notes, syncopation, your tone and feel can convey so much!
Notes are but one facet of the many sides of music, but beginners (and masters tbh) put an outsized focus on them, much to the detriment of their sound. Most players would be better served mastering the other elements: rhythm, feel, dynamics, phrasing, tone, articulation, space
Had a few days to process the Biscuits shows and I want to talk about something I find very special about Brownie that all aspiring bassists should note. It correlates with an important concept Vic Wooten discusses in The Music Lesson, namely that too many players focus on notes.
