nature has actually contacted me for comment about accusations that Sci-Hub is a threat, here is my full response / it is clear that academic publishers care about their money, not about security of other people
@ringo_ring What can an academic researcher with access to many paywalled publication do to help Sci-Hub? (Asking for a friend here obviously)
@ringo_ring Some young people somewhere, empowered by Sci-Hub, will make awesome discoveries that will make the world a better place. This is much more important than the financial interests of the greedy academic publishers.
@ringo_ring hey could you move hosting of scihub to ipfs? so it’s free from a take down order?
@ringo_ring Many poor students in the 3rd world (or even 1st world) cannot afford $25/paper or accounts at every publication. Verifying 30-40 references costs a fortune. Without sci-hub, I wouldn't be able to do any research basically.
@ringo_ring So sci hub is threatening the publishing, but arXiv is not? Such nonsense. Publishers don't pay the authors, they don't pay the reviewers, I don't know if they even have paper copies anymore. So no expenses, only profits. What nice business they have. Can we all be part of it?
@ringo_ring The buzzwords are revealing. As soon as "integrity of the scientific record", "data privacy" or "IT security" is brought up by anybody other than the primary stakeholders - scientists and universities, the bullshit levels are off the chart.
