If you’re a fan of ice cream, you’ve got to try my ice cream lifehack. I take it out of the freezer 20 minutes before I plan on eating it, so it’s softer by the time I do eat it. Might sound strange, but I’ll never go back to the normal method.
I would have hoped that in 2024 a central topic of the public conversation would be pandemic preparedness.
I would have expected that we would all be keen to make the investments that make it less likely to suffer through another pandemic, with more deaths and lockdowns.
Very good piece. One thing I would add is that historically people of all education levels would leave places like this, but when housing costs in destination cities are high, only better educated / more productive people can, so you get a more deprived “left behind” group.

Have disagreed with Open Democracy more often than not, but I don’t think it’s ever been bad faith, and I’m sad to see this. Hope everyone lands on their feet.

The Bill will NOT make pet theft a specific offence, and will not increase the maximum penalty for pet theft (& nor should it). It will however criminalise "inducing a cat to accompany" you, for which the maximum sentence will be 5 years imprisonment.

I’m convinced by @gamblingondev that elite buy-in in poor countries is necessary for them to grow. Here are some interesting ideas for making them more likely to do that.

"A 20-year-old today is about as likely to claim a health-related benefit as a 39-year-old was in 2019. A 35-year-old today is about as likely to claim as a 46-year-old in 2019."
👆 I found this a helpful way to frame the scale of the recent surge in disability benefit claims.

Faith in humanity: restored. I left my AirPods in an Uber this morning, and the driver returned them to my house, without even asking for money. I did of course reward him anyway, but what a lovely guy!
Three's 5G home broadband is great. No contract, £25/month, and no setup, so really simple if (eg) you're moving house. My Hyperoptic installation needed a permit from the council and god knows how long that'll take, but I'm tempted to just stick with this.
Because ads generate revenue in proportion to how much people use an online service, ad-based business models might have much better economics for AI than subscription-based, all-you-can-eat models.
