Suzanne McCarroll was a pro at the stories of strength and resilience in the journalism world. It didn’t take long to learn why. She led by example with empathy and compassion through 30+ years as a reporter at @CBSNewsColorado. In death, we reflect on so much. /1

But I understood and felt Suzanne’s impact long before I learned of her death today. A college mentor connected us in ‘12. I worked under her for two internships at CBS4 Denver in 2013. I sat with her while she interviewed families of the Aurora theater shooting victims. /2
I heard her cold call people she didn’t know, heard her responses when the door was shut in her face and learned a lot from her about the toll the industry takes. She lived empathy & compassion as a journalist because she knew challenge personally, and how to overcome. /3
She was the gold standard in her genuine approach with the community and with everyone. She took me under her wing and was one of the first to believe in me and my ability as a journalist. That feeling is so powerful as a young person, no matter the industry. /4
And the reason I feel passionately now about helping other young people through their journey. What a gift that is - the power of belief - and the gift of friendship that comes from it. /5
