Something I think we’ll process later, after this horror is brought to an end, is how much hateful, racist, shit we’ve read & heard since Oct 7 from people who are otherwise “normal” or even “upstanding” — physicians, lawyers, teachers, etc. The mask has been removed.

I actually think it’s fine if academics only write for each other and if you’ve ever glanced at a STEM journal you’d know this is already the de facto case and it only becomes a talking point because of a notion of the humanities as fundamentally unrigorous
@tallinzen @ndronen yes, teaching it the semantics of NLI through few-shot in-context from some NLI dataset could work, I am almost, but not completely, sure that we tried it for this work (we have some similar ones) and it didn't help.
"the new benchmark is so simple that it could be learn from a handful (one?) example. An old-fashion logic approach will probably solve the new benchmark with no problems." YES! and yet the models did not learn it in their massive pre-training. Isn't this noteworthy?
@yoavgo I love this kind of work on limitations. I don't know ACL well, but we had trouble getting our work with a similar flavor into mainstream ML conferences, so we submitted to a journal which gave us a lot of space to give more context arxiv.org/abs/2401.12947

other recurring criticisms (in the various rounds of reviews): - you don't evaluate on GPT4 so not indicative of SOTA. - [after adding GPT4] you evaluate on closed OpenAI models, we cannot learn from it. - you show failure cases but don't explain why the models fail.

What are your favourite "ice-maker" exercises (strategies to re-establish social distance when classes have become too relaxed)?
Am I the only one who disagrees with this??
Academia has a real problem when books published at the largest publishers in the world aren't considered "academic" enough for tenure, but books published at tiny academic presses are. Who are we writing for? Each other?

@dandekadt There is research on this: it comes down largely to having a good lab (eg access to excellent graduate student or postdocs, and managing it well).
Anyway, tonight’s achievement is nothing short of a technological miracle performed by ordinary citizens in the least glamorous facilities you can imagine (reader, I was there). May we all encounter lifesaving applied science in critical junctures in our lives.

@Jugistoteles Yeah but this is interesting to me: how do they sustain that level of input? I have moments where I do this kind of thing (60+ hour weeks), but I can't do it for more than 1-3 weeks straight before the wheels fall off.
