Now is the time for the U.S. Senate to do the right thing and call a vote on crucial voting rights legislation. Future generations are counting on us to protect our democracy. I wrote out some thoughts about why this is so important. usatoday.com/story/opinion/…
The filibuster has no basis in the Constitution, and in recent years, it has become a routine way for the Senate minority to block important progress on issues supported by the majority of voters. But we can’t allow it to be used to block efforts to protect our democracy.
That’s why I fully support @POTUS’s call to modify Senate rules as necessary to make sure pending voting rights legislation gets called for a vote. And every American who cares about the survival of our most cherished institutions should support the President’s call as well.
@BarackObama @POTUS Doesn’t the filibuster cut both ways? Doesn’t it ensure bad legislation isn’t passed regardless of party?
@zachcrates @BarackObama @POTUS Right now they’re in control and they want to keep it that way.
@zachcrates @BarackObama @POTUS Yes, that's why President Obama is in favor of carving out voting rights from filibuster.
@zachcrates @BarackObama @POTUS Maybe, but this is why we vote. Bad legislation? Vote them out. The filibuster just halts all progress and allows the minority to have more power than they should.
@zachcrates @BarackObama @POTUS @kyrstensinema made misleading speech today. For average joe it may sound logical. She said we need to stop the toxic partisanship and the filibuster forces both sides to work together. But recently republicans just want to block. And they have solutions.
@zachcrates @BarackObama @POTUS If you had politicians capable of truly scrutinising and amending bad legislation and a less arbitrary system you wouldn't need filibusters
