Licence to trill: Molly the magpie returned to Queensland carers after special wildlife permit granted dlvr.it/T5W9VM
@GuardianAus Stolen from the wild and robbed of his ability to have a family and children.
@ElleBellsy @GuardianAus Every spring we have to run campaigns & educate the public not to take the babies away, often the magpie chick will be on the ground and the parents are watching in the trees. That's how they learn to fly, branch to branch up the tree. Stealing magpie's babies causes swooping.
@Spockarama @GuardianAus It's so sad and infuriating that the Premier of QLD has made a mockery of the legislation and all who enforce it.
@ElleBellsy @GuardianAus I have been bawling my eyes out. We bust our guts to save habitats and species & we don't even get basic support on the most rudimentary best practices! I feel so betrayed.
@Spockarama @GuardianAus I think what he did needs raising in parliament. How can a premier overriding a protective legislation be ok?
@ElleBellsy @GuardianAus I agree. It does need to be raised in parliament. It also needs to be written about & content created so folks know why it is so wrong. I am thinking about how we can address this. Do you mind if I post a series of seven posts here so you can give me some feedback?
@ElleBellsy @GuardianAus It was cruel to keep the magpie instead of giving it to an experienced wildlife carer, mainly times I have taken an "abandoned" fledgling, back to where the MOP "found" a magpie. I place the bird/s on the lower branches & walk away & the parents fly down. 1.
@ElleBellsy @GuardianAus Otherwise it would have been placed with other magpies of a similar ages, progress through some large aviaries and then receive a soft release in an appropriate location. It is cruel to let a prey animal bond with a predator animal 2.
@ElleBellsy @GuardianAus The reason this is so desperately upsetting is that Molly will have a greatly reduced life span. We've seen this train wreck before. The prey animal will fly down to another predator animal & the "helpers" always keep it very quiet. 3.
